Settings on how new files are imported..
« on: August 09, 2002, 01:55:04 pm »

Is it possible to make a setting on how new files and albums are imported.

I always import my new albums with the checkbox "get file information from filename/directory" on, this way my mixed albums are imported correctly.

But if I rip a new cd, the files are imported into the database without this checkbox on, also when I rightclick in explorer and add a new album, this checkbox is not set to on, so they are imported incorrectly.

Thanks..

Well, if you rip with MJ, just fill in the information before starting to rip. (using MJ's File Properties or in-place editing)

About Explorer, I'm not sure.  May be a limitation of MJ 8...

How can I do that?

I place a new cd
MJ gets the songs information from the internet
I select all files
I go to properties

and then what?

I don't quite get what you're asking, but you may find what you want under File Properties->Tools->Fill Properties from Filename

When ripping a CD, the directories and filenames are set by MJ from the tag info from the CDDB. Then getting tag info from the filenames makes no sense. If the CDDB info is wrong, you should edit it in the CD, DVD and Handhelds view before ripping. This way the filenames and directories created by MJ will be right.

No, that is not what I mean, if you go to File -> Library -> Import media you see the option "get file information from filename/directory", by selecting this option my mixed albums are imported by album and not by artist.

But if I select a folder in explorer that I want to import, this option is ignored, the same happens when I rip a cd, when ripping is done the cd is imported by artist and not by album.

I hope everybody is understanding it now, my english is not that great..

Look into the difference between "artist" and "album artist" in the help file.

I think you need to fill both in, and maybe set your track naming scheme to use ALBUMARTIST intsead of ARTIST.

Take care.

I don't believe that is the problem, the problem is that the setting "get file information from filename/directory" is not working good, if I set that setting on true it must be true from where I import new albums.

what i wish is that i could include only some dirs in my pref like:

c:\my music\and all dirs under this dir
d:\my music
e:\my music
f:\my music
g:\my music
h:\my music
i:\my music

etc...

the problem with how it works right now is that it will search all the system and programs dirs and import all the mp3s that goes to all my other programs and games. this means i need to keep deleting them from the list everytime i import my music files.

I can live with it but it takes longer.

I was thinking about something yesterday not sure if i can do it, but when a song comes up do a search on a music site, pull up the browser, do a search for info for that page, cut it, insert it into the id3v2 tag. all this would be done auto without any user input and this may be a better way of doing this.

Marcel, what do you mean by

"when ripping is done the cd is imported by artist and not by album"

When ripping or importing, artist AND album information should be set correctly. The way they appear in the tree view on the left depends on how your view scheme is set up. What is appearing, where, and what do you want to appear?
