Image gurus: MC ratios for conversion
« on: February 19, 2008, 10:47:38 am »

I have some widescreen ratios that I'm having trouble converting with the handheld sync.

In Windows Explorer, the vertical ratio shots are shown laying on their side with dimensions of 2816x1584. MC correctly props them up, and reports them as 1584x2816.

When I convert, I tried to use a 590x1050 ratio for just these files and the results were very small images. I think MC applied the 590px to the 2816px.

When I tried to use 1680x1050, it's again backwards. Now my images are too tall: 954 x1680.

I pretty new to all this so please tell me if I'm making a mistake.

Based on the math I just ran, and your descripti0n, I'd say you should probably apply a 1050x590 ratio to the image. It sounds like, although MC is displaying the image correctly, its true dimensions are 2816x1584, not the other way around. So if you want the longest dimension to be 1050, then you'd go 1050 / 2816 * 1584 to get 590 (which you did get), but then because it's technically sideways, you'd apply it as 1050x590. If you wanted the other dimension to be 1050 when you were all done, then it'd be 1050 / 1584 * 2816 to get 1867, so you'd have to apply a 1867x1050 ratio to it, not 1680x1050, which it sounds like MC is interpreting as saying, apply the 1680 dimension to the 2816 side, and then keeping the other side proportional, which gives me 945, actually.
