MC12 and Philips RC9800i (or other) WiFi remote
« on: February 10, 2008, 01:39:24 pm »

This is both a specific question about this remote (which looks really cool) and a general question about WiFi remotes for MC.

I currently have the ground floor of my house wired with speakers, driven by two regular stereo amps connected directly to the computer + MC. I have a volume control in the kitchen but no other way to control the back of the house when music is playing.

All I'm really after is to be able to skip tracks and control the volume via a remote, but additional features that would make it even better would be, in order:

  - Skip/pause/resume
  - See what's currently playing
  - Browse the library
  - Rate tracks

I experimented a little with a PDA but it kept powering down and losing the WiFi connection and I found the UI quite poor (can't remember what s/w it was using).

I don't need to be able to remote control any other devices specifically. I have a UPnP streamer (Roku Soundbridge Radio) in the bedroom but that has its own remote and I don't need to be able to control it from elsewhere.

Any ideas?
Many thanks, Alfie.

Ugh, that thing is _expensive_! I'm using an old laptop (Mobile PII/300, 348MB RAM) with a simple WLAN PCMCIA adapter and VNC for remote control. Compared to the remote, you lose the touchscreen functionality and the "compactness" of the device, but on the other hand you get a fully working desktop with all MC functionality (plus the locally installed OS). And - for the price of the remote, you could get 2 of these old notebooks (; . Sorry if this is slightly OT, but there are always alternative solutions.

Thanks for the reply. That is an option but don't particularly want a laptop sitting on my kitchen table permanently. I already have a laptop and can't see me using it for this purpose. Plus I can pick up a second hand Philips for approx £100 on eBay which, although still quite pricey, is not completely ridiculous. I'm after something that is not just practical but has the "cool" and "space age" elements too!!

Cheers, Alfie.

Interesting... have been looking at the Nokia tablets (770, N800, N810) this morning. They do seem to be a lot more programmable than the Philips (not an IR remote though -- doesn't bother me too much). Also lookos to be decent community around these devices at http://maemo.org. The 770

I'm assuming the iPod would be too closed to do any deep customisation but I guess you could do quite a bit just with a browser client to control MC.

I remember a while back someone posted on the forums about a simple browser client for MC - did this get anywhere?

Regards, Alfie.

I'm just working on a html client (browser based MC). It's possible to customize the layout(if you have some html/css knowledge)... and i already saw a template for the iTouch (really nice).
