System Stutters?
« on: August 05, 2002, 12:17:42 pm »

I am experiencing a strange problem when playing media files on my computer. I recently experienced a HD crash, so I made a fresh install of XP Pro. Somehow, when playing a media file, my computer 'stutters'... every few minutes or so (or every few seconds, for that matter), the audio and/or video will hold and replay the same quarter of a second briefly (imagine the sound of a brief snare drum, or a stutter compressed into a quarter of a second).

I use MJ 8 for all of my media files, and this occurs regardless of type or size (ranging from 400MB Divx recordings to 2MB mp3 recordings).

This is not the fault of MJ -- it also occurs in WMP, but I was hoping that the community might be able to give me suggestions.

Here are my current system stats:

1ghz Pentium III (laptop)
XP Pro
Phys Mem (total) 392664 K
Phys Mem (available) 150000 K
System Cache 230000 K

Commit Charge (peak): 161460
Commit Charge (limit): 1141084

CPU flux b/t 4-20%

Using 150MB page file (out of 750MB allocated, 1180 Max)

*******

This occurs regardless of which HD the media is on (both laptop HD and firewire 7200RPM HD), regardless of whatever else is running (currently have no applications in background, minimal processes), regardless of the type of media I am playing (I could kind of understand it on a really complicated Divx recording, HQ of a concert, but...  an mp3?)

Any suggestions you can give me would be much appreciated.

You might try reinstalling your sound card driver.

If that doesn't work, what sound card are you using?

You can post your system info by doing copy system info from MJ Help and then pasting it here.

Well, I reinstalled the latest drivers... Still the stuttering.

Any further thoughts?

Ted,
I don't think it will make a difference but you're using a version that is not a release version.  8.0.336 is on our downloads page.

Well, if you're encountering it elsewhere this probably isn't it, but I was having the same problem with MJ last week (didn't try other players). Adjusted Settings>Options>Playback>Settings>Wave Performance Slider to max skip resistant, problem went away.

Wish I had some other ideas.

Upgraded Drivers, MJ version, still no dice...

Am using my ESS Maestro PCI sound on my Dell Latitude... I can export the audio to a playlist and now get that onto my ipod, providing fine sound, but I prefer the visualizations and flexibility of MJ...

Thanks for beginning to look into this!

Harry,

No dice... Thanks for the suggestion, I put all of the playback settings to what was recommended, and the skip resistance all the way up, still no change... this has probably got to be something with my sound card or windows, but I have no idea how to change it...

Thanks again,

Ted,
I don't think it is an MJ issue.  Did you try Microsoft?

Mine does that when the CPU maxes out at the same that RamBooster kicks in. I suppose that's when all resources are committed elsewhere.
After RB finishes it's thing (recovering unused but dedicated memory - Windows is bad about that)) the "stuttering" stops and the music continues.
I have no idea if this is even related but it sounds like you're down to sleuthing and ANY information could be a clue.

Could it be possible there is some background or spyware process sucking up processor cycles?  Whenever you do a new install, it's always good to take a look at the process list and your startup list to see what may be running you don't want to run.
