Deleting genuine duplicates 101
« on: March 27, 2008, 11:49:41 am »

Hello All,

General advice to weed our real duplicates (audio) is a smartlist like this:
[Media Type]="audio" ~dup=[name],[artist] ~sort=[artist],[name],[bitrate]

In plain english this is rather obvious - find and display all songs with same name, artist and sort by bitrate so you know which ones to Zap.  :)

Now to you seasoned gurus this is going to be a bit thick but I find this not so easy in the newer version of MC to set up the actual smartlist  :o - it is vaguely familiar to me but when I try to create the smart list it's not so obvious... Hopefully there is someone thicker than me so if this helps them, my humliating myself will be worth it...

When I create a new smartlist, I can name it - no prob "Poss Duplicate" Next line is RULES where I leave default - Media type is Audio and go to "Modify Results"? What do I set up there exactly - not obvious - a screen dump here would be really useful....

Thanks,

Thicky

I usually throw Album into that as well. Sometimes the same song shows up on multiple albums (like a compilation album or a live album). But there are times when either or both approaches are preferable.

Basically just change this: ~dup=[name],[artist] to this: ~dup=[name],[artist],[album]

Click on the import/export button in the top-right corner and enter your search string there, then click on the OK button.
If this is how you're more used to entering search rules, you'll find it a lot quicker and a lot less frustrating than the search wizard.

about to take a serious plunge (well have already....) just pressed delete on the comparison of the same files in MP3 format compared to APE.... If right will have a huge effect on disc space but still preserve my collection. If not well, I guess it's a case of quarts and some quality rippin time again!  ;D

Why not make this an option in Smartlist.  The only thing to be sure that you want to delete it, is to ask individual delete or delete all.

No too long ago when updating to a new release, for some reason, it duplicated
several hundreds songs and it took me a while to finally figuring it out by a sort.

But putting it in as an option in the smart list would really help.

Thanks, Skylar
