Does MC12 install FFD Show in my system?

I ask because it is there, but I do not recall ever installing it. Additionally after I removed it, it is back.

Is it necessary for MC?

It is necessary if you want to play FLV video from YouTube/Google Video.

It is also a good idea to have it for other video playback.

OK, so if I only use MC for Audio it is unnecessary.

(It's uninstaller showed up as a virus, which is what started my quest for it's removal)

FFDShow is an open source fairly well respected project, so if something is showing it as a virus... then in all likeliness, it's either a false posative
or something else is pretending to be part of FFDShow.
