What Is The Most "Smoothest Song" You Have Ever Heard? (No Marilyn Manson Does Not Qualify)

Mostly I Like Older Music (Because You Can Understand It) But I Also Like Smooth Jazz. Today I Ran Across this song And Both Me And Sue Thought This Must Be One Of The Smoothest Songs We Have Heard This Year.

Smooth jazz guitarist Peter White's lyrical lines and musical inventiveness are a joy to listen to. The affable Englishman's charm and playfulness comes through in his music, giving his style of smooth jazz a liveliness that others in the genre lack.

Born September 20, 1954, to an English father and a French mother in Luton, a town north of London, England, Peter White and his family moved soon after his birth to nearby Letchworth. His brother Danny was born a few years later. As a child, White loved sports, hiking, and tree climbing, but music was most special to him. His father encouraged him to learn many musical instruments — recorder, clarinet, cornet, trombone, violin, harmonica, piano — but the one instrument his dad couldn't help him with was the guitar; White was on his own. He learned to play simple chords by experimenting and listening with one ear glued to the radio.

Like a lot of musicians, White was heavily influenced by the Beatles and the guitar-driven sound of the beat groups of the '60s. At around age twelve, White would go over to schoolmate David Visick's house and listen to his large record collection. His favorites were Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Cream, and Jimi Hendrix. He bought his very first LP from Visick, the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

In his early teens, he acquired his first electric guitar and amplifier, which survived just long enough to be burnt in a fire. Forced to go acoustic, White developed a love of acoustic music. After leaving school at 18, White worked for a few months in a soup canning factory before getting his first musical break, a summer engagement at a South of England holiday resort. When summer ended, he went back to Letchworth having whet his appetite for more musical adventures. Traveling to London, the guitarist ended up joining a group that was managed by Miles Copeland (Sting, R.E.M., IRS Records). Copeland also managed Al Stewart, so when Stewart's backup band disbanded, White got an audition call to back Stewart on keyboards. Brushing up on his finger dexterity, White learned a few of Stewart's songs, and soon the 20-year-old musician was touring England and the U.S. In the summer of 1975, Stewart asked White to play keyboards and acoustic guitar on his Year of the Cat album (Arista, 1976). Their collaboration lasted almost 20 years, with White co-writing "Time Passages" (number seven pop, number one adult-contemporary, fall 1978) and co-producing Famous Last Words (Mesa/Rhino, 1993).

Around 1979, White moved to Los Angeles where Stewart had relocated, formed a band called Shot in the Dark with other musicians who had played with Stewart, and established a music publishing company called Lobster Music. Meanwhile his brother Danny formed the group Matt Bianco that included a tantalizing singer named Basia Trzetrzelewska (BAH-shah Che-che-LEV-ska). Danny White and Basia left the group to launch the singer's solo career. Basia's 1987 Epic debut album Time and Tide went platinum, bolstered by the hit singles "New Day for You" and "Time and Tide." Her second LP, London Warsaw New York (Epic, 1990) mimicked the success of her debut. Danny asked Peter to tour with him and Basia in 1990, just as the guitarist had released his first solo album, Reveillez-Vous (Chase). Made up mostly of unused songs that White had written for Al Stewart, the album became a DJ favorite at jazz and emerging smooth jazz radio stations. Epic exec Cliff Gorov was the man who first brought White's music to the attention of contemporary jazz radio. Former Al Stewart drummer Steve Chapman put down his sticks and became the guitarist's manager. After recording three albums for Sindrome, White signed with Columbia/Sony in 1995.

White can also be heard on the concert CD Basia on Broadway and on releases by Richard Elliot, Warren Hill, Craig Chaquico, Rick Braun, Marc Antoine, Kirk Whalum, and Everette Harp. White and the aforementioned musicians periodically do a concert tour, An Evening of Guitars, Saxes and More, with each artist showcasing their own music as well as collaborating with others on their songs. His solo work continued throughout the '90s with White releasing a slew of records: Caravan of Dreams (1996), Songs of the Season (1997), and Perfect Moment (1998). By Candlelight: Collection Vol. 2 was issued two years later.

"The Girl from Impanema" is also a qualifier, though!

"Your Gold Teeth" by Steely Dan is nearly there -- it does have some drastic (awesome) jumps, though, which disqualify it.

My favourite "smooth" and Torch song singer is Julie London. You can "curl up" in her voice as it caresses and strokes a song sung just for you. And most of her numbers, from the hit "Cry Me A River" to her sultry, sexy version of the "Mickey Mouse March", are wonderful. I think my favourite "smooth" number by her is "Laura". But just trying to find my favourite smooth song by her has taken awhile as I got lost in her performances of so many songs, and changed my selection several times. And if you haven't ever heard her sing, you've been missing a real treat. And she was one gorgeous lady too!

Good Topic! But what is smooth? Is it just the tune or is it more the interpretation, the arrangement, the production quality, etc. As somone once said " a good song is always a good song" but not necessarily 'smooth'. As King Sparta said, the older standards take some beating and with the right treatment can always be silky.

Try Quando, Quando, Quando by Michale Buble and Nelly Furtado, does it qualify as 'smooth' ? Or some of Chris Botti's interpretations?

The list will go on forever . Long live 'Smooth"!

Torcuato Mariano "Ocean Way" album Last Look

With the moderator's permission, there is a song in which Patti Austin did backup vocals. and the lyrics say something about "I'm flying, ...flying." I have tried locating the lyrics/song but she does back up vocals for many artists amd have not found it. I thought it might be a Quicy Jones tune, but no luck.

Anyone have an idea?

Smooth jazz..heh..is jazz for ppl that dont know much about jazz...kenny g stuff. Too ** commercial.

Cool jaz on the other hand is something that started off in the early 50s, west coast sound, brubeck & al, which amazingly still sounds good today. Brubeck's takes on the most common of songs is fantastic. A bit of trivia, brubeck's college teacher's discovered he could not read music when he was a sophomore (Pacific college?) and were seriously considering chucking him out, they finally relented to let him graduate on the condition that he not teach music in the future.

i'm not one for smooth anything, but marvin gaye & barry white would make the list.

marvin gaye - Was My Girl Friends And My Favorite song. But that was long ago, and have been married almost 31 years now.

I knew my wife 6 weeks before we got married, she said yes after 3 weeks. since i had no money, no job, and just got out of the air force (6 inches or so of hair growth), my dad bought me a suit to Get married in, i was going to Ware my blue jeans and T-shirt. After i got married I went back in the military, the army this time.

I tend not to like jazz where anyone is singing, i would rather hear the music. The Sax, Piano, And Guitar. Kenny G Did have a few good songs.

I am not sure i would think of marvin gaye & barry white as jazz even if it maybe.

I was referring to marvin & barry for their smoothness factor, certainly nothing to do with jazz...was trying to get back off the tangent.

If it's any consolation, i did like kenny g for a while and am less proud to say i even attended a concert of his

, which featured his circular breathing skills. Hold one note for maybe 5+ minutes, longer even without losing breath.

...but then you get to listen to older stuff from the 50-70s and you can lose yourself easily in the jazz genre for a few years, so many artists with enormous discographies. A lot of it pretty darn good too. Sometimes i get the impression, all jazz got done in that era.

The smoothest songs by far is Bubble Shuffle by Larry Carlton, or Behind The Waterfall/Desert Rain by David Lanz and Paul Speer.
