Vista Home Premium (32-Bit) freeze
« on: June 09, 2009, 03:25:16 pm »

Hi MC-Team / Community,

recently I changed my XP-based Notebook to an HP DV7 with Vista Home Premium. Installation of MC 13 (latest build) worked quite well and the program started, my library was loaded correctly, MC played back my playlists.

But ... often MC freezes the laptop. This means that the MC window becomes lucent and Vista says something like
"Application is not responding. Kill? Wait?". Music is still playing but I can't control MC in any way.
Meanwhile the other software is like frozen, eg. a download stops at 99% - but there's no high CPU-Usage.
After MC was killed the system / the applications behave as normal.

I tried MC 12 Build 534 with the same results.

Any ideas?

Greetings!

You can try 13.0.171 from the download page here, but it isn't MC.  Try turning logging on in MC Help and read it when the problem occurs.

Killing the application could cause additional problems.

Most likely is a hardware issue somewhere.

Thanks for the very fast reply, Jim!

I de-/reinstalled MC 13 and looked whether the problem is still reproducible. And yes it is. So I turned the Logging on and did the following: Load my default-library, choose  one of my favourite playlists and add it (right click) to the Playing Now. Then I clicked the "next title" button a few times to play one special song. This caused the "Frozen Vista Effect" - Music plays, but no refresh of the GUI.

There's one part of the Log with an Error-Text. Can you read extract of the Log and guess what it might be? Seems that MC wants to activate the CD-ROM.
The Laptop itself is only a few months old, comes directly from HP, no extra-devices like soundcards etc. I placed the systeminformation after the log.

Thanks in advance!
Markus

And one additional informationen, JimH. Closing of MC also caused the effect. But for me the LOG shows nothing significant. Maybe for you.

But the LOG is to big for a post. Should I send it by mail? And if so, to which adress?

The system is locked up because some piece of hardware isn't working.  MC doesn't need to "activate" anything.  Something is hung.  If you have any devices plugged in, unplug them.

Does it hang if you don't play anything?  This sounds a little like a Vista soundcard driver bug someone had recently.

Hallo Matt,

clicking around in MC without playing music does not cause the effect.

But some things need about 1 - 2 minutes (or so):
- Accessing the (local) harddrives in the tree
- Closing MC
- The following start of MC

Strange ...

It sounds very much like a driver problem. Go to the website of the laptop brand you have, and download the newest updates for all major stuff. Like chipset, audio and video. Drivers that comes along with a preinstalled system is hardly up to date. If the company don't have all the drivers, go to computer management, device management, and try to search for driver of each individual component.

This is one of the reasons why I never touch a new computer until I have reinstalled and updated it from the scratch.

Someone fixed a problem a few weeks ago by updating a Realtek driver.  Try a search here and at google.
