*.mod files
« on: June 21, 2009, 12:16:03 am »

Hi all
I'm trying to run *.mod video files in Media Center 13 without success. The files come of a JVC GZ-MS100AA CamCorder and will only play in the camera supplied software (pretty clumsy software).
Any clues appreciated
Thanks

Google found lots of info about the .mod file extension and the file format.

Here is one of the links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOD_and_TOD_(video_format)
and another one: http://www.masternewmedia.org/news/2008/06/12/how_to_convert_mod_video.htm

Apparently the video encoding format is standard MPEG2 with an AC3 audio stream. For playback in MC you can simply rename the file extension to .mpg assuming you have suitable DirectShow filters installed. The CCCP filter pack would probably work. More info about DirecShow playback: http://wiki.jrmediacenter.com/index.php/DirectShow_Playback_Guide

However, it might be useful to actually convert the file format by using some software tool. I read that, for instance, the aspect ratio info may not be included in a compatible format in .mod files. Naturally, if you edit the videos you should use an appropriate output format setting when saving the finished work.

For additional camera, file format and editing info you could try the camcoderinfo.com forum: http://www.camcorderinfo.com/bbs/index.php
