How To: Move all files to another drive?
« on: April 21, 2003, 09:14:13 am »

I currently have a 9gb collection on an external hard drive, and want to move it to the internal c: drive.  Most (but not all) files are in the current library.  I'd like to move them and maintain the present folder structure, changing the drive letter only.  I assume there's a reasonably good way to do this, but I can't figure it out.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Muchas gracias.

i guess it would depend on your drive structure.

but the "Rename" option should work you just need to make sure the drive rule is setup correctly.

Hmmm.  A bit confusing.  My folder structure is basically
   g:\music\artist\album\filename.mp3
and
   g:\music-longfiles\artist\filename.mp3
Obviously, there are many sub-folders.

The only MJB rename function that sort-of makes sense here, that I can see, is the file-properties-tools-"rename files from properties" function.  Is this what you mean?

I don't use MJ8 (I use MC9) but that sounds about right if i remember correctly.

make note that you can change the rules in the dir and file name if you wish.

try one or two files and see how it works with your rules and then if everything is ok then go for it.

I'm actually thinking I'll just move the files outside of MJB, and then re-import, to create a new library.  That seems simplest.  Too bad there isn't an easy tool for this, along the lines of "send to a device."

Well I have known it to be done by people with a G.E.D. as I stated above, so I am sure you can do it.

Before you do that, make sure to 1. back up your old library in case anything goes wrong, and 2. make sure your tags are saved to the files (select all/right-click/save tags to files) so that when you import again, the values are preserved.
