General questions about MC15 and networking...
« on: December 23, 2010, 09:32:43 am »

Being a Systems Engineer, I like to think that I'm technologically proficient...

I am evaluating Media Center 15 and I have compiled a fairly large library of lossless music.  It's not feasible to carry that library from one computer to another as I move around the office because it's too large.

I am considering moving the library to a Windows 2008R2 or dedicated Linux server installed in some central location and then using some lightweight client to access/play the music.  I have read the Wiki/manual and these appear a little short on both overview and detail.  I'm hoping someone can enlighten me.

#1) The documentation variously refers to "Library Server" and "Media Server".  Are these two different entities or do both refer to what is currently called the "Media Server"?  If these to are not the same, what are the differences and why would you use one or both (please provide just a general overview)?

#2) I've experimented and have successfully run MC15 in Media Server mode and accessed that from a web browser on another PC. That configuration meets my need for "lightweight client" accessibility.  Can multiple browsers connect to the MC server concurrently and playing different audio or is the server limited to a single song going to multiple clients?

#3) I also see that the full Media Center can operate in client mode and connect to a Media Server for those times when I want the full, rich client.  Is that limited to one client per server or can the server support multiple full MC clients, each playing a different song?  If so, do both the server and client require seperate licenses?

#4) The library currently resides on a temporary server that I want to move.  I've got a lot of effort invested in the currently library and organization.  Can someone give me an overview of what is required to move the library to another system and keep it intact?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.  We can always use another engineer.

1.  See this link for definitions: http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Servers

2. and 3.  See this link: http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Media_Network  Read about WebPlay and WebRemote.  But MC itself can connect to a Library Server.  The wiki should explain that.  Library Server can handle multiple connections.  One license covers all "your" machines (within reason).

4.  You can use MC to move files.  This link may help:  http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Moving_Files   You can backup in MC and restore (including your settings) in another copy, then change the drive letter.
