Struggling with zones
« on: January 15, 2011, 12:02:48 pm »

Here's my situation...

I've got MC installed on my desktop in my bedroom and would like to play the music in my living room where my high end speakers are. I have a DLNA enabled receiver (Onkyo HT-RC180).

I don't really understand zones and how they work. I'd like to be able to sit on my computer in my bedroom and play one song through my speakers in my bedroom and a different one in my living room. I'd like to be able to control all of it from J River.

Anyone guide me how to set this up? Do I need to have my receiver in a certain mode?

Probably better asked in the network forum, however your Onkyo should show up in the playing now as a zone on the main window, left hand side.
You will have to enable DLNA in the media network. Working from memory you will need server and enable mc to control other DLNA devices.
At which point you should see the Onkyo and be able to select it as the zone or go to a track / album and right click and use the "send to" option

Nothing will work until the Onkyo shows up in "Playing Now"

On my den on it is seen whatever input the receiver is set to, but of course I need to select Network Audio input if I actually want to hear what is being streamed from MC to the receiver

Have you tried to do the Onkyo setup using Windows Media Player like is shown in the user manual just to get it to show up in Network.
What OS are you using?
HomeGroup or standard network? (shouldn't matter but it wouldn't be the craziest thing I ever saw out of Windows)
Do you have network discovery on?

Jim -- The Onkyo doesn't appear to be showing up on any of the PCs

Have you tried to do the Onkyo setup using Windows Media Player like is shown in the user manual just to get it to show up in Network.

HomeGroup or standard network? (shouldn't matter but it wouldn't be the craziest thing I ever saw out of Windows)

On point 1, I have not done this yet, though I suppose I could try it.
I am using Windows 7.
I'm using homegroup, but the Onkyo receiver isn't going to be int he homegroup because it isn't running Win7 (obviously). So regular network.
Yes network discovery is on.

It may not be a controllable DLNA Render.  It may work in the other direction -- using the Onkyo to select music from a DLNA Server.  I don't know that, but it is possible from the description of how it behaves.

6 months or so ago I remember seeing the Onkyo visible in Media Center playing now, but when I added something to the Onkyo playing now, it didn't seem to play. Now I don't see it in the list at all.

Nothing has changed that I know of.

When I go into the receiver, I can see J River Media Center, but that is for controlling the system from the front end and I'd rather do it at the back end using MC interface.

There is a setting in Network setup to enable/disable "Control".
Do you have it enabled?
