Theater View setup on LS Clients. Settings resetting
« on: September 25, 2011, 06:05:06 am »

I've been tweaking my Theater View setup on a new client, only to realize that this settings is reset when I restart the client or computer. It happened with both the views and info panel.

I was under the impression that you could have different setups on each client. That you did not have one master library that was pushed from the server. Is this not the case? What can I do to preserve my individual client settings?

I can't answer your question, but I can tell you that what you are trying to do does work on my Client machines. I have TV Tuners installed on my two clients so I setup Theater View on the clients (only) to show Live and Guide on the clients, but not on the third client or Server (which don't have Tuners). This has worked well. So Theater View is different between the machines. Several reboots and nothing has changed. Settings stay.

Except ...
It turns out I can only watch live TV, I can't record TV on a client machines (and the TV guide is erased with each MC upgrade, which isn't a big issue). So I just changed the setup for each client to make them a "stand-alones" each running their own Library. Now I import all the media to each machine (rather than Client-Server relationship). This means I have to setup and administrer several computers now.

This last bit is probably not relevant to your post, but it may matter if you ever decide install Tuners on these machines. I think JRiver is looking into a fix.

Just tested again by removing some views in Theater View. Restarted the LS client and, wooofffh! Default settings. I remember someone else having this trouble as well. It's only happening with my LS library. Not local libraries. How come this happens with me and not CountryBumkin?

I'm using build 176. I've installed MC16 in the program files directory.

As you may know, only some of the changes you make on the client are transferred to the server, and then only if you have "Automatically sync changes made on the client back to the server" set on, which in turn requires authentication to be used on the server.  The sync changes setting is under Media Network/Client options.

Aha! I see. I've activated authentication, but I have probably forgot to check the "Automatically Sync back to server" setting. What I find a bit strange though, is that this settings was not transferred when I chose manually sync with library server.

I'll test more later this evening. Thanks for the hints!

This is not working at all. I've tested with two clients connecting to the same server now. I've checked the Automatic sync to LS option, and I've even tried manual syncs to the server after I've changed the Client Views. they will NOT stick after I restart MC or disconnect from the library. But the Number plays and so on will be transferred.

I've even tested this out on the local library on the server, and the changes sticks there. I thought that it might be something with strict control on the Program Files directory on my Win 2008 R2 server. But that does not seem to be the case.

I've also chacked that I use a Username and password to connect to the server. So, that should all be in order.

What else can be the problem here?

...after I've changed the Client Views they will NOT stick....

Changes to views from a Library Server client are not synced.  From the WIKI:-

What Is Synced
File value changes (artists, keywords, playback statistics, etc.)
File deletes
File adds (server adds always go to clients, client adds go to server if the server can reach the file)
Playlist additions
Playlist changes
Television recording schedule

What Is Not Synced
View customization (columns, sorting, adding / removing views)
Playlist deletion
Options changes (each client maintains its own options)

Hmmm... So, does that mean I have a problem writing the settings on my clients then? I'll do some more testing on the local and LS libraries later on.

The Theater View Views are stored in the library, so all the LS client machines will get the servers theater view views every time they start.

And any changes made on the clients are not sync'd back to the server, so are therefore lost on a client restart.

At one stage the root level views in theater view were stored on the client and not the server, but this caused problems with people creating views on the server and then them not appearing on the clients, so it was changed quite a while back to have all views in the library.
