MC, Sonos and Replay Gain tags
« on: February 10, 2009, 04:05:04 pm »

I am a long time user of MC and more recently a huge fan of Sonos.
Is there a way for MC to apply volume leveling (replay gain) tags to mp3 and flac files that Sonos will recognize?
Currently, I have to use Windows Media Player to apply the mp3 volume leveling tags and foobar2000 to apply the flac tags.  Needless to say, this is a pain.  Any help is appreciated.  I'm sure there must be others experiencing the same issue?

Here is a link to more information from Sonos:  https://sonos.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/sonos.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=330&p_created=1121384320&p_sid=NNOyJVbj&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MTIyJnBfcHJvZHM9JnBfY2F0cz0mcF9wdj0mcF9jdj0mcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT1hbnN3ZXJzLnNlYXJjaF9mbmwmcF9wYWdlPTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1mbGFjIHJlcGxheSBnYWlu&p_li=&p_topview=1

Thanks!

This is from your link:

Quote
Windows Media Player

mp3 tag = "AverageLevel"

wma tag = "WM/WMADRCAverageReference"

Apple iTunes

mp3 tag = "iTunNORM"

aiff tag = "iTunNORM"

aac tag = "iTunNORM"

Other Tagging Software

flac tag = "REPLAYGAIN_TRACK_GAIN"

I an surprised that they don't support the "REPLAYGAIN_TRACK_GAIN" tag in MP3 tags. Some time ago MC was fixed to write that tag because it is the de-facto standard (excluding WMP and iTunes). Instead of using WMP you could quickly convert the tag values to iTunes format with Mp3tag. You would need to create a so called "Action" for the task in Mp3tag (you can ask help at their forum.). Personally I would prefer to use the values from MC's analyzer. MC uses the original Replay Gain analysis system. It is probably more accurate than the analyzers in WMP or iTunes. (At least MC's system is fully documented at the Replay Gain website: http://www.replaygain.org/. I don't think Apple or MS have published any details about their systems.)

"REPLAYGAIN_TRACK_GAIN" in FLAC files may be available in the near future. Bob from JRiver has kind of promised to do that change, but it may take some time (Bob has been busy with other tasks: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=50403.0)

Is it possible to simply add a new library field called "iTunNORM" for all audio files and copy the MP3 and FLAC tag values that were assigned by MC to "iTunNORM"?  This sounds too simple and the values probably wouldn't be correct, but it's worth asking...

Thanks,
Chuck

Probably.  There's one way to find out.

So how did this turn out?  I have the same need to get Sonos working with my MC library replay gain values.
thanks
