seeking to understand user field export/import
« on: June 13, 2011, 01:07:16 pm »

I want to create a new library with a subset of files from my original library and preserve all field data. I prefer not to clone and delete unwanted stuff because the original library is so large and complicated that it will be time consuming to delete everything except the subset of data and views I wish to keep.

I exported an MPL for the subset of files and imported this into new empty default library. I observe that user fields were not created and populated. I was under the impression that MPL moved all data including user fields.

Is this working the way it is supposed to?

What is the best method to achieve my objective?

Thanks for your help.

I think you need to create fields before you can import data to them; MC doesn't auto create newly found fields from data imports...

Thanks Mark.

Would appreciate someone from JRiver confirming this is intended.

I think MPL import should create all user fields but can live with it either way.

I think Mark is correct, but the best course would be to set up a test using a small set of data.

I have so many custom fields that pre-creating them prior to import is not useful even if it works.

It appears that clone and delete is the only viable method.

Perhaps JRiver could add to future todo list for MPL import to create user fields.

Thanks.

Just clone the library, delete all files, and then create a smartlist of the removed files and delete the files once again from that smartlist to clear the files for good (smartlist rule: ~d=r ). Of course, you should select the option to delete the files only from the library.

The custom library fields will remain and will be populated correctly when the MPL file is imported.

EDIT

In case you want to restore also the original "Date Imported" values you may need to import the MPL file once again to update field data. Use the "File > Import Playlist" command. Auto-Import cannot do that.

EDIT 2

Even if JRiver would like to add a system for automatic field creation, it would not be possible with the current MPL format. J River would need to start storing also the field specific settings in the exported MPL files.

Ahhhh.... Now I understand. Thank you.
