LAV audio decoder / decode DTS-HD to send PCM multichannel to amp
« on: September 29, 2011, 08:49:38 am »

Hello,

First I would like to congrat the devs for this wonderfull app ! Struggled a lot with Media Player Classic HC / various filters with random results ... :)

Now with RedOctober HQ + Lav Cudid + MadVR, along with movie cover support, I'm almost in heaven :) I'll for sure buy the product at the end of my trial period, you deserve it :)

I have still a few issues though ... :)

First one :
I use a Nvidia 330GM on my laptop to feed my Yamaha RXV-1900 through HDMI Connection. This amp can decode HD sound, but my 330GM does not handle bitstreaming of DTS-HD or True HD. Therefore, I need to decode the HD sound on the laptop, then send it to my AMP in PCM.
On Media player classic HC, I used the trick to simply put the dtsdecoder.dll from TMT5 in LAV audio decoder folder, and I was able to see on LAV audio status window that DTS HD-MA was correctly decoded.
Whereas with MC16, during playback, I can't see the LAV audio decoder status, it is greyed out in DirectShow filters view and marked as "auto-configured". I'm not sure if MC16 is using is own internal LAV audio decoder or my tweaked install with dtsdecoder.dll.
How can I make sure that DTS-HDMA is correctly decoded to PCM ?

Second issue :
WASAPI or WASAPI Event Style... I don't understand what's going on with this one... :( Only DirectSound output is working for me..
If I select WASAPI, on saying a 6.1 DTSHDMA 24bits/96Khz soundtrack, output is always changed to 2 channels in MC16, I really don't know why.

Any help would be very appreciated :)

JRiver's location for the LAV Filters is c:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 16\Plugins\lav. You can place the dtsdecoderdll.dll file there. It might get over written with an update, though. Alternatively you can put the file in the C:\Windows\System32 folder.

Regarding WASAPI you could try using the Output Format DSP (Player > DSP Studio). Set it to 5.1 and see if that works. You could also try resampling to 48 Khz.

Can't test right now but why would I need resampling to 48Khz ?

I mean, in Windows7 advanced sound settings, I checked the two cases authorizing exclusive access to my device and I tested sound output up to 24bits, 96Khz, all channels from my 5.0 setup were OK.

From my understanding, WASAPI exclusive should output the sound as it is, ie 24bits/96khz , no ?

If I make sure that Output format DSP is unchecked and then I launch the video (6.1 96/24), I get only 2.0. When I go back in Output Format DSP to check what's going on, MC16 seemed to automatically checked Output Format and set a 2.0 configuration.

Should it be because it's a 6.1 video and I have only a 5.0 physically ?

That is probably the problem. That is why my first suggestion was to try 5.1 output.

Do you not have a subwoofer?

Some devices handle a higher frequency for stereo but a lower one for multi-channel which is why I suggested trying 48 Khz. My soundcard handles 192K for stereo but 96K for multi-channel.

Yup, no subwoofer, only 5.0 with very large front left+right, it already make the neighbors suffers :p

Anyway, Ill try to dig what you said.. I do not use a dedicated soundcard so I need to make sure the Nvidia 330GM is capable of handling 96 or 192Khz multichannel PCM via HDMI.

Quick question though.. In Directsound, all seems to work. If I understood well, Direct sound will match the setting I put in the Windows Mixer sound advanced settings, in my case 5.1 96Khz/24.

In this configuration, my amp displays correctly a PCM 5.1 on its screen. But i'm not sure if it is really in 96/24 or not.. Is it possible that Directsound downsample automatically ?

More generally, how can I check what is really sent to the AMP ?
