Landslide
« on: November 02, 2011, 08:02:00 pm »

The song Landslide, A Stevie Nicks song was performed on the X-Factor tonight, this is one of my all time favourite songs, and as with Stevie Nicks this has a special meaning to me and parts of my life. I personally do not believe anyone can sing this song like Stevie Nicks can.

I just saw Lindsey Buckingham in concert in San Francisco a couple of weeks ago.  As you may well know, he had a profound influence on Stevie's life, and this was one of the first songs she wrote after her Buckingham tutelage.

I'm guessing you may also enjoy the song Crystal from the eponymous Fleetwood Mac album.

Stevie Nicks wrote this song while living in Aspen, alone, while Lindsey toured as a guitarist for the Everly Brothers.  They were struggling as a couple, and as performers, and for Stephanie, drug use was starting to creep into her life.  On the strength of this song--along with other Buckingham compositions--and a chance encounter with the washed-up serial drunkard Mick Fleetwood, the modern Fleetwood Mac was born.

The "landslide" she refers to, and her "reflection" on the mountain, is Ajax Mountain, whose steep slopes come right into town.  If you drive your car at Ajax Mountain, eventually you will dent your fender against the mountain, it is so steep.

Critics never seemed to take this great song seriously, apparently for its lack of cynicism, or reference to any of society's ills.  It is a great track, and if you ask me, the finest female vocal performance for pop music--rock or country.

+1 on "Crystal", which is another Stevie Nicks composition, this time sung by Lindsey, although the lyrics are overwhelmingly "female".
