Status of TV support in MC17 - couple of questions
« on: January 06, 2012, 01:10:53 pm »

Hi,

I have been globe-trotting on business trips and vacation for last 2 months so haven't had a chance to follow up with MC17 developments since early November 2011. I am back to my favorite HTPC and want to get rid of the current TV recording software in favor of MC17. I have 2 questions:

  • When I left, it was not possible to have a HTPC with MC17 in client mode that could record TV. Is this limitation still there? It is not possible for me to run the Antenna cable to Server PC. And, I do not want to run 2 MC17 on the same machine (one server and one client) just to be able to use TV capability inside MC - it would be simpler to stick with my existing software.
  • How is the support for commercial skipping? Is it integrated or needs to be done separately with some scripts etc.?

Thanks,
Osho

Sorry, no big changes to TV while you were away.  You still cannot control/use the tuner on the server from a client (as much as I wish you could).

As for commercial skipping, MC will not find commercials or create the files needed to skip them on it's own.  However, I wrote this post a while back on how to automate the process so you don't need to touch anything after this to get comercial skipping. I have been using it since with NO problems.  Some of it doesn't apply/is unnecessary if you don't use WMC to record the shows, but either way, it will get you the .edl files you need and MC seamlessly skips commercials on all my TV, which I LOVE!!

It may look overwhelming or complicated, but it's really very easy, and I think the pictures really help show exactly what needs done, in case you wish to try it yourself. Surprisingly to me, no one ever reported back any success or failure, so I'm not sure how anyone else is getting the files, or if anyone else is even doing commercial skipping.

I have also been very surprised at the dearth of posting on commercial skipping. As I've posted here before we use the HDPVR as a tuner and MC can only record TV using the .jtv format. For Comskip to be able to mark the files they can't read the .jtv files but do read the commonly used .ts format.

Coming from SageTV this is the most lacking thing for us and I am surprised that others don't see this as a problem. Or perhaps they do and just don't talk about it, or they go to another PVR software.

I believe that JRiver is working on a solution to this issue, but have no idea if it has much priority.

I should also mention that all of our files that were recorded and marked by Comskip in SageTV are very successfully having their commercials skipped in MC.

OK - thanks for the info. By the way, I do not want to control/use the tuner on the server from a client. My tuner is on the client and I would like to record on the client. However, I recall that this was not possible - the tuner has to be on the Server. I am hoping this limitation has gone away or will go away in near future. Though, I am not keeping my fingers crossed :).

This looks super - I will definitely try it out! Thanks for typing this up and sharing.
