SOLVED: Red October can't play MKV files with VC-1 video
« on: January 25, 2012, 05:28:27 am »

Hi

I'm having a problem with my bluray/hd-dvd ripped MKV files containing VC-1 video.   I get a "Failed to connect Video decoder to source/splitter error".   All files with VC-1 are affected consistently.

It occurs with both versions of Red October, Standard and HQ (not surprisingly, it's not a renderer issue).

I suspect the auto configured version of LAV Video Decoder has VC-1 disabled?   LAV Video has this disabled by default, I think.   And I believe the auto configured version is squirreled away somewhere by MC....so I can't fiddle.

I also tried various custom codec settings, trying ffdshow as the decoder and WMVDecoder with no luck.  As well as different splitters (so maybe my theory above is wrong..).
The best I can get with LAV Splitter selected (not LAV Splitter/Source) is a preview image and "opening" text.  MC then hangs and I have to end the process in task manager.

The only config that will work is Windows Merit (ick).

I'm running Media Center 17.0.73.0 registered, and have the latest version of LAV Filters 0.44 and madVR 0.8 installed.    These VC-1 files are clean and play in MPC-HC and ZP with no issues, using LAV Splitter, madVR and any VC-1 decoder.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Mark

Hi Mark & welcome (I recognise your nic from other forums)  ;D

* VC-1 plays fine in both RO modes and has for a long time (including VC-1i) and does so from all container types.  Try checking / unchecking HW Accel under Tools --> Options --> General Video Settings.

Can you give

2) a media info of the file you are playing  (eg my example of a VC-1 file)

I cannot copy the filter graph of a file with VC-1 during playback as playback will not start.   However to see what filters are loading in general, I have copied the filter graph of a file with AVC video:

Could you send a log file to johnt at jriver dot com?
For VC-1, if you have CUVID support we use the LAV video decoder, else we use the Microsoft video decoder DMO.

Log file sent via e-mail.  (The current log file is RO HQ, the previous one is using Custom I think, attempting to use Haali Splitter.)

As I have an ATI 4850 it should be using the microsoft decoder.

Thank you guys for the prompt response!

ProTip:  If you wrap your log pasties in [code] bbtags (you can select the text and hit the # button on the forum post editor), they'll look like jmone's and not yours.

Mark - can you split off the first 10sec or so and upload the sample to a hosting site? (I just use http://www.filesplitter.org/) as you don't even have to remux

1080p VC-1 in MKV has almost worked for me for some time on XP SP3. A few moths ago it did not work at all. (I have Windows 7 only an old "test PC" and it is not powerful enough to play 1080p).

The RO ST or RO HQ filters are loaded correctly, the file plays, and also the subtitles show up. However, I have a sync problem - video plays in slow motion and lags behind audio. This isn't a CPU issue (CPU usage is below 30% during playback).

Classic flick and one I use for my testing (but I kept the TrueHD track)!  Anyway, as you can see your sample plays fine on my Win-7 rig so I hope JohnT can see something in your log file.  Are you running Win7?  Have you tried unchecking HW Accel?

I just tried it out because my config is very similar to yours.

I'm on a:

Win 7 x64
Core i5 750 (overclocked)
AMD 4850
Dual Monitors

Other settings, in case they're relevant... I'm using

MC 17.0.76
Options -> Audio -> Output Mode: WASAPI Event Style
Outputting to analog outs on the PC
Video Mode: ROHQ
Hardware Acceleration: Off
AMD Catalyst 11.2 (I haven't updated in a while because it is working fine and my GPU is old now in this machine)

It worked fine.

Crap.  Our setups are almost identical.

Works for you, but not for me  :(

You wouldn't happen to have used some of those codec tweak tools that disable certain decoders, like the MS WMVideo DMO Decoder in this case? :)

Could you look at the database field "Compression" for this MKV file and copy and paste it here?  From the log file you sent it doesn't look like we're recognizing that the video codec is VC-1.  If the compression field looks wrong, try doing a "Library Tools -> Update Library from Tags" on the file.

Nup.

This decoder works fine in other players.

It says "mkv video (video: unknown codec, audio: FLAC Framed)".

And yes, "Library Tools -> Update Library from Tags", has changed the compression field to "mkv video (video: WVC1, audio: FLAC Framed)", and it works now  :)

Thank you John!  Can't complain about the support!

BTW I had some other fun with Tags - I had to manually set the Media Sub-Type to Movies, as only 1/3 of my movies were recognised as movies.  Something funny is going on.

I wonder why that matters, though? :)
If i were to create something like auto filter selection, i would instantiate the source filter, and then check the media type it creates on its output pin for a specific type to match against, and not rely on a database field.
Just saying, seems like alot of extra work to rely on the field there for codec selection - especially if the field sometimes fails to populate. :)

Well, that's how the database field IS populated - by building the graph at import time and checking the media type.  Unfortunately we had a bug a while back that didn't handle a few file types correctly so database entries prior to that time could be mucked up.  Update from tags fixes it of course, and we shouldn't see this problem moving forward.
