Black screen with video
« on: October 11, 2012, 03:42:39 am »

Hi

I have found recently that when playing an mkv often the playback will stop, screen goes black and the only way to restart is to restart MC.  Pressing pause twice restarts the audio only not the video.  It's happend with different files. Version 186. Any ideas. Rather annoying timing as I have just finished converting to mkv, importing and tagging my library!

Does this happen in the middle of playback, or only when starting a playback?

This happens mid playback never yet happened at the start, however if I skip to the next file then I still get the black screen.

Try using the stop button, not the pause button.

We're aware of this problem, but haven't yet been able to find the cause.

Stop will just stop then playback does not resume.  Also noted that I got a black screen when video was in pause.

This has all been on mkv.

With iso it seems that playback has also become temperamental. I tried a DVD iso and when accessing the DVD menu I could not access the menu options, clicking on them did not activate them.

Thanks for looking into this

Not quite.

Under Tools/Options/General there is an option called Resume playback using bookmarks: automatic.

A video should continue where you left off when you stop and play it again.

Sure I am aware of the bookmark feature.  What is happening is that during playback the screen goes black and play stops.

Couple of quick Q about your system,
- what is your OS, GPU (and the Driver Version)?
- what is your audio/video connection from the PC to the TV/Monitor and Speakers?
- are you using RO, ROHQ, or any custom filters?
- is it all video files, all MKV, or only some particular subset?
- any stability issues with this PC in general?

Thanks. In answer

W7 64, Radeon HD6870 CCC 12.1, and CCC says up to date - which seems odd since CCC is on 12.10?
HDMI from GPU to TV, RCA from Asus Xonar Essence ST to amp
RO HQ
this behavior with mkv only so far (its what we use)
odd stability issues - the grey background around the Windows Orb sometimes is black and only turns grey when moused over, sometimes when mounting an iso to create an mkv with makemkv, makemkv cannot seem to  read the iso and it hangs. I have noticed that my wireless keyboard now is sometimes unresponsive other than the Windows key

the video problem happens seeming every time we play an mkv, so is making MC unusable at the moment. The picture and sound will stop and screen goes black, pressing play again twice resumes audio only, sometimes not and I need to hit the Windows key to allow me to access task manager and stop MC; then restart MC and resume my viewing

i can pm a log - to who should i send it?

Many thanks

Did you try Red October Standard?

Send the log with a link to matt at jriver.

The log you sent is pretty normal (which you'd expect since playback starts normally and plays for some time).

But is it possible it's an HDMI sleep issue?

Try turning off the screensaver and turning off letting the computer sleep the display (Control Panel > Power)?

You might also try ASIO for audio output with your Asus Xonar.  That's required for bit-matched playback, but if WASAPI stalled, it might cause something like what you're seeing.

Matt, thanks so much for looking ath this.  I was experiencing some screensaver issues with my aquarium so have gone to a stock windows one and also ensured in power settings I never sleep the display.

I have had trouble installing ASIO for my Xonar in the past, any directions on where to get a driver package and install instructions? Do I need to uninstall anything to do with the WASAPI?

Many thanks!
