recognizing external hard drive

In MC17, I want to copy my music to an external hard drive.  When I plug the drive in, and go to drives and devices, it does not show up.  Windows recognizes it and assigns it a drive letter.  If I go below drives and devices to explorer, I can see the drive, but cannot copy files to it.  If I plug a thumb drive into the same port, I have no problem doing what I want to do.
