30 FPS videos Set to 59.94Hz Instead of 60Hz
« on: January 02, 2013, 03:32:07 am »

There is no 30 fps option for display changes. So, 30 fps videos are being applied to the NTSC 29.97/59.94 category. This is a problem for anyone who has a gpu/display that can do proper 59.94hz for NTSC sources because 30 fps videos are being played at 59.94 instead of 60hz.

Refresh rates are exposed as whole integers in Windows, so how do you pick 59.94 vs 60?

With my ATI Video card 59.94 is "exposed" as 59 and 23.976 is "exposed" as 23.

Yea, all AMD cards allow you to select 23hz (23.976hz) and 59hz (59.94hz).

Bump, in the hopes a dev sees this. I think it would be a super simple fix to add a 30 fps category for the display change settings.

I've seen it, and it's on our list.

Thanks.

I think you'll find the AMD approach is still less than perfect. Indeed you can select "59" or "60" but subsequentially both are displayed as "60" in both Windows and in CCC. And if you set to "59" CCC will not subsequently accept a switch to "60" - it thinks that is what is already set, although the timings are, in fact different. Same is true for "23" and "24".

Bottom line, it is possible to choose whether you want to use round number, or NTSC-friendly timing, but not switch between the two, at least not without:

- ALWAYS switching, even if Windows tells you the correct rate is already selected, and
- switch via a third rate eg. 59 -> 50 -> 60

Which is messy and visually distracting to say the least. Better to choose either 59 or 60 and use Videoclock to correct for any difference.

Yes, this is true, but if you have an external program handling the refresh rate changes like Auto Frequency or MC18, this limitation does not apply. They have no problem switching from 59 to 60 or any other combination of refresh rates. No need to do it manually.

My experience, admittedly not using MC18, has been these tools in the end make a standard call to change refresh rates (Windows or specific to AMD, not sure) and that the driver ignores this request, without any error, if the requested rate is the same as what it believes the rate to be e.g. if you request a change from 59 to 60, but the driver thinks the rate is already 60.

It is certainly worth triple checking that this really does work in MC18 and the switch is not in fact being silently ignored.

Coming next build:
NEW: Added 30/60 fps option in Video > Display Settings, to separate 30/60 fps video from NTSC videos.
