MC18 on a tiny Intel NUC dc3217IYE - IT WORKS GREAT
« on: January 05, 2013, 01:46:14 pm »

Just tried to run MC18 on a tiny Intel NUC. As the CPU has an intel HD4000 I thought that theoretically it would work but can now report and confirm that it surprisingly works very very well.  Wanted to make a tiny setup in my bedroom and it's really surprising what this small box can do. I run it with 16GB of 1600 so-dimm ram and a samsung 64gb msata ssd...red october HQ also works decently on it.

ADD PLEASE NOTE : An OCZ NOCTI msata ssd was not recognized by the NUC bios. The samsung worked out-of-the-box !!

The MC benchmark is the following :
=== Running Benchmarks (please do not interrupt) ===

Running 'Math' benchmark...
    Single-threaded integer math... 7.548 seconds
Single-threaded floating point math... 5.031 seconds

Nice!

What CPU does it have? I thought these came with Core i3's or i5's?

Wow, that's impressive. My AMD E-450 APU (18w TDP) only scored 689 total...It only has support for single channel ddr 1333 memory whereas that intel board does dual channel ddr 1600 so I bet that's a big chunk of the improved performance.

I'll have to seriously consider one of these Intel NUC for my next HTPC. Can you bistream all the digital formats over HDMI with that?

Bitstreaming should work (haven't tried it out yet). The fan is virtually inaudible even after 1hour of bd playback. I'm very pleasantly surprised with this NUC. Will buy some more for other rooms in the house.

I've been using the same. Works great. 4gb ram, 128gb msata, what I had lying around the house.

Go to your windows sound properties. Go to the properties of the HDMI output. Under "Supported formats" tab you should see a list of codecs it's capable of bitstreaming. Do you have dolby true hd and dts-hd on the list? I'd also be interested in what bit depths and sample rates it supports.

will hook it up to my living room amp...windows shows only the codecs and abilities of the hooked up material (EDID). In my bedroom I have a simple samsung lcd which accepts no compressed format nor more than 96khz/24bit. will let u know

Bitstreams without any issue. All formats (dolby true hd and dts-hd incl.). On the pcm side multichannel up to 192/24.
