Appearance of Media Zones on Clients
« on: April 25, 2013, 12:29:00 pm »

In Options->Media Network->Client Options (when connected to a Library Server)->Show playback zones from the server on the client what is this supposed to do if Show Playback Zones is UNchecked on the server?

I was looking for a way to stop the display of local server zones on a client MC or on Gizmo, and hopefully not all or nothing.  But it doesn't seem to affect anything, the server zones still show up on a remote MC client, or the web page.

Is this a bug, or am I looking at in the wrong way?  I'm using the latest 18.0.171 on both server and client.

Also, is there a way to use Vorbis as the stream encoding for a remote off-net Gizmo or equivalent?  The only current selections are three MP3 speeds (max 320k) and PCM.

Thanks.

On what?  Where?

The only place I see that you can right-click and HIDE, is in the Playing Now window, under the Playing From xxx (Library Server) selections on the MC client.  But there is no HIDE option for the There: zones that exist on the server, on the client.

I'm a little unclear of your network topology.

Zones can appear through DLNA or because you're connected to a Library Server.

You can control both behaviors in Options > Media Network.  Turn off 'DLNA Controller' on the client or 'DLNA Renderer' on the server to disable the DLNA part.

My original question had two parts.  One related to an MC Library Server with an MC Client on a localnet.  How to keep all the zones of the server from appearing on the client.  I see now that it can be done but only by settings on the client, in its media options.

The second part was how to keep all server zones from showing up on Gizmo.

I don't have any active DLNA clients, but DLNA (Generic) is enabled on just the server for other devices to be discovered.

I'd really like to see a little more flexibility in the authentication to a MC Library server.  Having only one authentication ID assumes that any device connecting remotely (whether it be another MC, a browser, or other application) all have the same purpose and can display the same options.

Would it be suggestible to allow x number of different authentications, in which each one can be set for a different level of access and display?  Especially with the browser client access methods, but not just those.  In some peoples' hands all options are 'safe', but in others it could be disastrous to the Library server.  I certainly wouldn't want to give my wife a login which shows remote zones, allows playlist modifications, deletions, etc.  Not because of malicious intent, but due to carelessness in operation.  I'd want to confine that to local playback and a local list.

It just seems that so much more could be possible for multiple net users of the server (family, friends, etc) but doing that now could potentially cause many problems.  I don't know if that's getting outside of the design goal or not.  Would be a nice addition to an excellent product, though.  I'm still amazed at all MC can do right now.  It just seems like a little more refinement in net access control would be quite beneficial.

I agree.  Someday.
