I recently upgraded my computer to Windows 8 and installed Media Center 18.  When I select an album and start playing a song the windows says that the player has stopped working and is searching for a solution and then the program shuts down.  I uninstalled and re installed it with the exact same result. It plays for about minutes and shuts down.  Not sure what to do  - I just upgraded to 18.  I backed up the library before re installing it and restored it.

What hardware are you running it on? (particularly the sound card/DAC)
Are your drivers up to date? (especially if you've just upgraded to Windows 8)
Are you running the latest version of Media Center? (18.0.174)

What audio output are you using? ASIO (not ASIO4All), WASAPI, WASAPI Event Style, DirectSound, Kernel Streaming?
Typically ASIO is the best choice (if you have a true ASIO driver) with WASAPI Event Style being next after that.

If you are already using WASAPI Event/ASIO, have you tried changing the output to something else?

If the program is still crashing, can you please save a log (help > logging) and upload it for the developers to look at.

The DAC is your "sound card" in that case. (what DAC is it?)

Depending on the DAC, it may have its own drivers. (or use USB Audio Class 1 and not require any) It's useful to check the manufacturer's website.

I am in the process of downloading the ASIO.  What does this do?

The ASIO driver gives Media Center direct access to the DAC hardware. Note: don't install an ASIO4All driver - only a true ASIO one, if your DAC manufacturer provides it.

What is an output?  Is this a USB device?

The audio output mode is specified under tools > options > audio. WASAPI Event Style is generally recommended as the best choice for Windows 7/8 unless your DAC/Soundcard manufacturer offers an ASIO driver. (which it sounds like yours does) In that case, ASIO would be the best output.

Check 'enable logging'
Click done

When you have your next crash go back into logging and click on report problem

This will copy a log on your desktop that you can email to jriver

Look under Help/Logging. Enable Output to a log file and follow the 3 steps displayed there.

You can try sending the log but I am not sure developers look at logs sent to them if they did not request the logs to be sent in the first place.

Can you look under Tools/Options/Audio and list what:
- Output mode is set to
- What device and which options are selected under Output Mode Settings.
- List hardware buffer size while you're there.
- Open DSP & Output format and check whether Output format is enabled and how its configured

Can you list the brand/model of your USB DAC?

Like 62 said, you may need to download a driver from the DAC manufacturer.

The only version I can find on this site is .158.  Where do you mean at the top of the board?

I found it and downloaded.   Lets see what happens!

The new version appears to have worked.  I made sure to uninstall the previous version before installing the new one.  Time will tell if it is a long term solution.

I would still recommend setting up ASIO / WASAPI Event output though, even if it's stopped crashing.
