How to playback swf files?
« on: April 12, 2013, 08:34:37 am »

Hello All!

I love MC and it is my "media center" in which I organize all my media.  Thank you to the developers!

I currently have the following issue and could not find a solution.  I recently purchased The Beatles on USB which contains shockwave files (.swf).  I'd like to playback these files through MC18 (version 166).  The .swf files are placed in the movie folders and I can see them in MC18.  If I click on a .swf file, MC18 would crash.  If .swf file type is associated with an external program like Adobe Flash Player Projector, it would play fine but it is using an external program -- which probably means it cannot be streamed to other zones.

What is the proper way to handle flash files with MC18?

Thanks for all the help and the great program!

SWF playback uses the flash player control installed on the system.

I don't think the feature is used heavily, but it is playing for me.  You may need to install Flash player.

It does look like there's a bug when switching tracks / stopping.  I'm not sure if it would lead to a crash, but it made the debugger unhappy.  It will be fixed next build:
Fixed: Stopping video playback that was using a third-party COM-based playback engine could cause problems.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the quick reply.  When you said that I might need to install flash player, which type of flash player?  I have it installed for the browser and also the stand alone flash player (Projector) from Adobe.  Here is the link to the different types:  http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the help.  In the newer version of JRiver, the crash no longer happens.  However, is there a way to play the flash file that would allow the user to "stop" the playback manually?

The file I'm playing is an interactive file (a booklet for the album that the user can flap page to page).  However, when JRiver plays the file, JRiver does not wait for user input and it decides that playback has been completed and it stops (or move to the nxt item).  So the user does not get the chance to interact with the flash file.  Is there a way to change this JRiver behavior in the playback so the user can actually interact with the flash file?

Note that the flash file plays fine using a stand alone flash player.  Again, thanks for your help.
