Selection Order
« on: March 26, 2002, 04:24:22 pm »

Hi,

Looking for an easier way...

When I select songs via File/Open Media File... then Alt-A
to select all in that directory.  The order of the files
seems random.  If I want to burn those files I have to
arrange them in a seq that they are on a CD.

Since MJ is reading ID3 tags which have the Track #'s,
why can it not arrange the files in that order.  Am I
missing something?

Related to the same issue:  When I select/highlight
all the files then right-clik and Properties, MJ first does
a device check.  I have to right-click again to see the
Properties.  Could this be done in one click?

Hi KingSparta,

You sent me in the right direction - thanks.  I did not find the Auto Sort,
where is it BTW?  I did find the Auto Column Size, after which I could see the
Track Number and I can sort by that.

Wondering, how does MJ assign its own seq # and what is the purpose,
since it does not seem to coincide with anything else.  Each time
I open MJ, the files are sorted by the Seq #.

Sort is under MJ/Settings/Options/Tree & View Settings.

Thanks JimH,

Did that now.  Have Track # (ascending) in that
sorting filed.  Also have the "Track # for Albums"
box checked (not sure what it does).

The results are the same.  Every time I open a
media dirctory, it is sorted by seq # - not the
Track #.

...again,

The sort order thus selected does seem to
apply to viewing media library, but does not
seem to apply when:

"I select songs via File/Open Media File... then Alt-A
to select all in that directory. "

I guess I'm just wondering why you don't just import all of your media files. That's really the way MJ is designed to work...

You are right Doof...

If you were to import all the files and look at them via
Media Library, then the designated default sort work.

I use MJ more as a work tool, rather than a player.
Consequently my library is not very stable.  One day
I may be able to call it a library, right now it's
a "songs in boxes" moving from room to room.

The are some many great features in MJ, that we don't
talk about here, which I like.  What gets brought up
are small nuances resulting from the variety of uses
this great piece of software offers.

BTW just tried to rigister several times and it failed.
Guess it's not ready for the market yet

I just tried what you said. What I got was all of my files in Playing Now in alphabetical order by filename, except for the very last file alphabetically was listed first. I'd read that that was a bug in the MS Common Dialog Control (the last entry being returned first). But other than that, everything is in the order I would expect since files get sent to Playing Now in the order they were selected, and in the case of opening up files in this manner, that selection order is alphabetically by filename.
