What's missing in Version 8?
« on: March 26, 2002, 06:14:57 am »

If you have found that features you liked in version 7 are missing in version 8, it would be nice to hear what they are.  It may be possible for us to change this.

I haven't taken out a stopwatch and done time comparisons (the stubbornness of 8 to leave and 7 to run again being significant factors), but I think that the whole ripping-CD thing is inferior to 7, and seems slower. In 7, whether this is true or not, I could do both normalize and rip/encode simultaneously, but not in 8, or at least that's what 7 and 8 each claim.

8's copy one, encode one, copy next, encode next just seems slower than 7's method of copying them all as fast as it could and then letting the encoding catch up. Again, no time trials have been made, but the subjective experience seems slower. Particularly since I can remove the disc in 7 after the copying has happened but the encoding hasn't, and can move on to use the drive for other things or insert the next disc, while in 8 you just get the feeling of being stuck until the whole thing is finished.

And it does seem appropriate to mention here that I supposedly was granted my wishlist item for mass ripping support (allowing copying to continue across multiple discs while the encoder catches up, in the method of 7), but no such animal has been seen to date. And again, my opinion is that the 8 experience is subjectively longer, so not only did I not get my wish, I got the opposite; it was made worse.

Just my .02.

It's been a while since I've looked at 8, so disregard if this feature has changed.
I really like (or maybe just got used to) the find music feature of MJ7.  Seems much easier to find a track in MJ7.

If you mean find a track you have in your library, it's Control-F followed by the name of the artist or album or track.

There is also "Find CD" under Playing Now on the tree.  It finds the CD on a web site like Amazon.

I would like the "recently imported" as in 7
On the top of media library-or not in fact. But with the automatic update.I mean you do not have to empty it,you get only your last imports

To have name of band AND songs when playing a stream playlist

Dont know if this is possible in V7 or V8 - maybe you can do it already.

But a nice feature would be to be able to cross reference files to multiple entries in the library.

So if i have a compilation album with a Bruce Springsteen track on it

It would show up against the Compilation Album as well as under Bruce Springsteen but both entries point to the same file.

I agree about the way Recently Imported works now... I liked the old way of automatically clearing the list on restart. How about a compromise... a check box before a new import (clear list? or apend new itmes?), or maybe a smartlist like timer-- items imported in the last xx days.

At this point, we can't add new things.  I'm just looking for old things that were dropped that might be reinstated.

JimH - I'm with zevele10 - I definitely don't like Recently Imported functionality in v.8. I would like it to be configurable so it will work as now or in pre v.8.

Am I the only one confused by MachineHead's post? Did we unleash a monster by teaching him how to post graphics?

Statistics functionality has been seriously eroded in V8.
The ability to sort the entire library by time/per artist or number of tracks/ per artist was crisp and easy in V7.

The V7 "Recently Imported" would clear on close.  I think I preferred that.  Maybe an option to clear or not is possible.

I haven't had a Beta since the replay gain disappeared, is the shuffle going to remain on the player window?
If so, (ala V7 so that you can see whether shuffle is on with no clicks), cool.
If not, could the shuffle button be made available to add to the toolbar in the ususal manner of customising the toolbar.

Look for the ability to "reset on exit" in the next build.  Thanks for the suggestions.

I liked the way how to use Filter in version 7, you could see straight away what filter you were using without hovering with your mouse over the options.

What I liked in earlier builds of MJ8 compared to the latest builds are
in fullscreen you could lock the toolbars and see the artist - name - time in the toolbars

OK, how about another compromise... I liked the old track tool-tip window including the location of the file. I did get annoyed by the super long tip window so, how abourt just the file name back?

I often have duplicate tracks and want to quickly see which should be deleted-- the location, or at least file name often helps. I know I could scroll over to the location column, but I'm lazy.

What's missing is the toggle status mode option like it was in the very first alpha. Why did you guys remove that? If I want to show the info on the song now, it clutters up the text.

Please put that back in. I thought it was a cool feature when 8.0 first came out.

It was in the alpha versions. Clicking on the Time area, it would go through a defined list instead of just showing all items as it is now.

What would be cool is to run through a customized list instead.

That way you could have elasped time/total time (position blah blah blah), then the next line would be bitrate/hz whatever and could have the same (position blah) so that would always show when switching. Keep the left/right. Get what I mean?

Instead of e.time/total/r.time hz bitrate position....all crunched together and unreadable. Info always readily available when toglling through.

I know it's a great idea. Just trust me.

One visualization I liked was the "Sky Dive" in ver. 7, it had the "Cool Blue" color to it.

I'd like to be able to use an external media editor (in addition or as replacement) like DartPro or Cool Edit etc.

support for 4.1, 5.1 speakers (neither Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 or 4.1 rear speakers work in v8)

(yes, drivers updated, yes, works in every two-bit JB program out there, but this Porsche is finicky, and if I remember correctly, they worked in 7.2--that's the reason for posting this here).

Hi

I am not 100% sure that it was version 7 or an earlier Beta.

I run Windows XP Pro, and play my music from a networked PC. When the network PC is booted up AFTER this PC, the network connections for each network drive have to be "woken up" in or MJ will not find the files.

I am almost certain that a previous build of MJ actively "woke up", refreshed, restored or whatever each network drive as it was called upon from the music library, and the music played. Now I have to go into and double click on each drive first before MJ can play.

It might be that this is some other system setting I have inadvertantly changed... I not know...
