TV Network streaming crashes immediately
« on: May 26, 2013, 03:01:25 pm »

For the last couple of MC updates, I cannot watch live TV (PAL DVB-S) through network streaming, instant crash. Both RO and ROHQ crash. Hardware acceleration and Videoclock disabled. Log sent (logs at jriver dot com).

The problem is with network streaming only, not for TV playback using the DVB-T/S card. There are no problems there (apart from the long-standing issue of requiring another application for DVB-S).

.195 has the madVR 86.2 update which may fix this (assuming you are even using RO+HQ).

I am not able to reproduce the crash, but have some idea on it.  I made a special build of a DLL with additional logging.  I hope you will be able to reproduce the crash using this DLL, and then provide another log.

Sent (still crashes). Also, if possible, please consider a way to increase the startup speed of network streaming, it takes at least 10 seconds for playback to start, at least in this/my case (DVB-S/T through sat receiver in network).

I will try it later today.  Meanwhile, please try using this JRPlayer.DLL

It doesn't crash now, but will still not play. Either stuck on "opening..."  or I'll get the message below (RO standard). Similar with ROHQ ("something went wrong with playback" with no details).

The URL of your file does not look like one from MediaFire.  Since you gave me a MediaFire link above, I decided to try streaming from it.  I created an account and up loaded a .ts file.  I can not stream that file, nor can I stream sample files that are already on that server.  The server stops giving data after about 8KB.  Furthermore I can not stream those files in other applications either (for example VLC player).

Streaming has nothing to do with Mediafire. I just uploaded a video file there (it's a proper Mediafire link), that's what I thought you asked. It's not meant for streaming of course, just for download. The streaming is done in my network, from a network-capable Linux receiver (192.168.1.5) to my PC in another room. VLC/MPC-HC have no problems with it (never did) and neither did MC, at least up until a couple of recent updates.

Here is a direct dropbox link to the video file. VLC can stream it and so can MC. The problem could be with the .m3u file format these sat receivers use.

update:

Here is one such file.

It seems MC cannot open correctly these files any more. Tried opening them both as a link (as I always did through the receiver's web interface) or by first downloading and then opening the .m3u file/link as a file from MC ("Open Media File" "something went wrong with playback").

Sorry about the confusion.

I meant to ask you for a true streaming link, not for downloading.  A downloaded .ts file should never be an issue.

What I saw from your log is that MC crashed while trying to play a "true streaming" video - a video file that is streamed from a server, and the server does not provide the file length and probably does not allow clients requesting different segments of the file.  Your Linux box probably did such streaming.

.m3u issue is likely a separate issue.  I will check that out.

It doesn't crash now, but will still not play. Either stuck on "opening..."  or I'll get the message below (RO standard). Similar with ROHQ ("something went wrong with playback" with no details).

For what it's worth, please provide another log that shows the file not playing.

Ok, sent. This is from trying to open the .m3u file with "Open Media File...".

It turns out, m3u is not a separate issue.  The playlist contains mpeg audio and the streaming of which was the problem.  I guess this is somewhat good news.  The bad news is that I still do not know what caused the streaming to fail.

When attempting to play the m3u, MC first tried to analyze the file(s).  The analyzing code actually succeeded in opening the URL and building a DirectShow graph.  The problem is that subsequent attempts at opening the URL failed, including when MC tried to play it.

Please try these DLLs again, and provide a log.

Please try again with these files.

Did you say it used to work?  Especially with the same streaming you have been trying?

Log sent. There is no crash or error message now, it's just stuck on Opening... Yes, there was never a problem with MC with these very same streams/files (apart from the delay in opening). This a very recent problem.

I just read your latest log.  It shows that this time playback actually succeeded.  It took a long time to open the stream (12 seconds!), but nonetheless it built a DirectShow graph and started playing.  Is that what you saw?

Also, this log is different from previous ones in that the stream contained video (MPEG-2), whereas previous logs showed audio only stream.

It did not succeed. Black screen stuck on "Opening..." with no error message. The stream always took about 12 sec. to open, even when working in previous versions. The change in the log is probably because I selected a different TV channel (mpeg2, instead of mpeg4). But I never selected an audio-only channel. Maybe it'll help you if I just install an old version and provide a log. Just please give me the link (v.16x should be fine, possibly later too).

Got the log.

I see how it works, and to tell you the truth, the new version should just work the same way.  Not sure what is going on.  Please try these files again with the latest MC version.

Sorry, we are back to crashing with the new version. Log sent via email, hope you get it. May be it can help to identify exactly which version started to cause to problem. You could send me a few links with the recent versions that had the most major changes. I think it started somewhere in mid-v.18x but can't be exactly sure.

update: Didn't use the new .dll files - hold on.

:)  18.0.201 now finally works after replacing the files, thanks a lot for persevering. My only request is if you could reduce the opening delay (as an indication, MPC-HC takes almost as long as MC - VLC starts almost instantly - maybe sth. to do with the way the filter graph is built?) and a reminder for the satellite/DiSEqC switching issue, a barrier for using MC as a DVB-S player.
