Welcome.

We recommend WASAPI when possible.  A little more here:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Audio_Output_Modes

However, both WASAPI and Kernel Streaming provide a hardware direct connection.

Automatic picks the highest quality bitdepth automatically.

So leave it on automatic unless it doesn't work with your hardware.

Internal Volume should be just as loud as any other output. (assuming they are all at 100%)

I prefer Kernel Streaming to WASAPI.  Cleaner and more focused sound.

I disable internal volume completely, but only do so if you have another way of changing the volume - amp/etc.  That is just personal preference, though.  The KS settings I would recommend for best sound are: (1) the highest *integer* bitdepth that your hardware supports.  Try 32 and if it gives you an error, drop down to 24, and so on.  (2) Use the lowest buffer size possible for best sound.  The lower you go, though, the more likely you are to get dropouts and clicks/pops - so start low and work your way up until any problems go away.  I personally have no issues at the lowest possible setting.

I would like to try Kernel streaming for hubbies music but for some reason it does not work for me. I use bit streaming connected via spdif.

when I go to the settings I dont see the audio device as it is blank??

I don't think all hardware devices support Kernel Streaming. You should be using WASAPI or (native) ASIO instead if your system supports it. (WASAPI is available from Vista onwards)
