original format is 44.1

If i change the bitrate from original 44.1 to 96, what will be the impact better or worse?

Put on your headphones and playback pink noise. Switch between 44.1 and 96. If you here a difference your resampler may not be quite transparent.

Using JRiver (or if your soundcard resamples properly) it won't be better and it won't be worse. Generally speaking.

I assume that if the equipment is upto standard, it won't be any different at all!

Well, yes and no: you won't hear a difference if your equipment is up for the task. You can measure a difference, though (don't ask me how, I wouldn't know). So a true difference exists but not one you will hear on any well-designed resampler.
