MC18 TV DVR viewing over LAN ?
« on: June 28, 2013, 01:54:17 pm »

Okay, I know that if a particular PC with MC18 has a Library and a Hard Drive of music, then other PCs in the LAN that have MC18 installed, can access those files.

Can they also access Live TV that is being DVR-ed by another PC on the LAN ?

In other words, the TV tuner and antenna connection is on a living room PC with MC18, can a bedroom laptop with MC18 access the TV channels ?

Thanks !

If you put the TV tuner in the "Server" computer all of the Clients can access it. So in your case, the Living Room computer would be the MC Server and bedroom computer is the Client.

Hmm... several days later, the same client shows zip - nada - in the TV page.   Even though the server PC has lots of recordings.

Is there an equivalent to "pulling the plug and plugging it back in" on a DVR, to get the client to "reset" and work correctly?

It's still set to use the server as its Library...

The client should pull a copy of server library each time it connects to the server.  You would always see what the server has.

Restart the client?  Restart the server?

If the Server has the recordings stored, then you probably don't have your client machine's "Theater View" setup correctly to display the Recordings/files.
I have my Server set to record all TV programming to drive G:, then I have autoimport setup to make Media SubType = TV Show for anything that it imports from drive G.
Your setup may be importing the files as a media sub type = Movie, in which case you won't see the recordings under the Thetaer View roller for TV.

When the client starts up, it issues a bunch of messages (paraphrased):

"Trying to connect to 192.168.0.2... unable to connect"

The problem is that the server is not at 192.168.0.2 and has never been at 192.168.0.2.

I used the six character Access Key to connect the client to the server, perhaps there is a bug in that code ?

I cleared the Access Key from the server and generated a new one, and that one works fine on the client (but previously the client worked the first time, so we will see...).

If it does continue to work, that would still indicated a bug in the Access Key code...

Still having problems connecting to the Server after the first time that the new Access Key is entered on the client.

Also, the documentation states:

Quote
4. In order to be able to play all file types on the Client, it is important that the media file path is the same for the client as described in the file paths of the Library and used on the Library Server system. This may require mapping the drives used on the Library Server MC on the Client. You will need to do this in Windows Explorer on the Client.

Is this still true, and if so, how would one go about doing this when accessing a Server with many disks from a Client with just one C: disk ?

If you are using a router that can reserve/assign a static DHCP address, try that. I was having connection issues a long time ago when computer was automatically assigning and renewing address, then MC couldn't connect to new address, so I setup static DHCP address (like 192.168.0.100 for server, 192.168.0.101 for client) so it never changes and I have not had any problems since. Could this be your problem?

Try UNC file paths for all of your file shares...that should help out.  Second what CountryBumkin said about IP address reservation.  If your router can do it (most major brands can), it's the way to go.  Resolved all of my problems with client/NAS connections.

Thanks for the very good suggestions... I know they are good, because I happened to try the static-local-ip-address idea myself before I read this thread again, and it seems to have fixed the problem.   I did not have to reserve it in the router, I just did it in the TCP/IP properties for the wireless adapter.  (I would imagine that the advantage of doing it in the router is that the laptop can then automatically get IP addresses when you are traveling, but in this case, the laptop probably won't be used for travel.)

As far as the file path issue, so far that has not proved necessary... perhaps it was only necessary for an earlier version ?

I don't think UNC paths are required...the Wiki states you can Map Network Drive (which normally means you can assign any open drive letter as a path to a network share) but I've always made a habit of using UNC paths instead of mapping drive letters to all of my shared folders.

Anyway, glad you've got it working.
