MJ 8 Fails to update multiple mp3 tags at once (QUESTION)
« on: March 21, 2002, 12:15:44 pm »

MJ fails to update ID3 tags when trying to change the tags on more than 1 file.

We've seen this reported multiple times, but have been unable to reproduce it.

Could anybody that's having this problem use the "format" tab in the File Properties dialog to answer these questions:

1) are the files CBR or VBR
2) do the files have a Xing header
3) does it always fail on the same files
4) what types of tags do the files have (ID3v1, ID3v2, etc)
5) what do you have set for your tagging options in Plugin Manager -> Input -> MP3

Thanks for your help.  Hopefully we'll get to the bottom of this soon...

I have this problem consistently, and will post details. First, though, can you tell me how I'd know if an mp3 has a Xing header?

I do know when changing tags it works fine for me when your playing an mp3

But

when your playing a MP3 and you use tools to rename the file mj will give you a error it could not because the file was in use or locked etc... i think it is a bug that could be fixed by stop play, rename, start play.

to go along with that where it is playing it should start at the same place it stoped, and not restart the play from the begining.

That sould be a simple fix (IMHO)

All that information is in the "Format" tab in File Properties.

Thanks.

OK. I took 80 mp3s burned with MJ. Here's the data for all the CDs:

MPEG-1 Layer 3
320 Kbit CBR
44.1 Khz Stereo

ID3v1 Tag: Yes
ID3v2 Tag: Yes

Copyrighted: No
Original: Yes
Protected by CRC: No

I did a mass tag change, by changing the genre from rock to alternative and then I hit "save." MJ made the change just fine. I checked the tags in Tag&Rename, and both the ID3.1 and ID3.2 tags were changed. I then switched the the taks back to rock in MJ and everything went fine, and was verified by the other program.

Next, I selected a group of 25 mp3s that were downloaded from Napsteresque sites (shut up. They are the only ones I have, the band's music is long OOP, and even unavailble used via eBay/Gemm/etc). These files range from 128-192 kbs CBR, all have both v1 and v2 tags (edited by MJ and/or Tag&Rename)and based upon the info in the comments field, were ripped by a variety of programs, including Real Jukebox and a couple of different vinyl-ripping programs. The result was identical to the results above--not a single problem.

Lastly,  I remembered that I was having the problem that you're seeking to correct--namely, that MJ would crash during mass editing (this was just 3-4 days ago, with version 8.0.227). At the time I had downloaded about 500 mp3s from those unsavory sites, many of which were in VBR. I had tried to get them a little organized, so tried to edit the artist tags, for example, but MJ kept crashing (and I've since deleted all those files--either I liked 'em and ordered the CDs, or didn't and deleted them). I'll rip some VBR files in MJ and test, and download some VBR files as well to test.

Oh, in other words--I don't have anything useful to report yet.

part of the problem may be that the mp3's may be corrupt for some reason or another and that may be the problem.

granted MJ should not crash but it is a possibility.

All files were ripped by another brand of  ripper and encoded with Dmitry Kutsanov's build of LAME.EXE v3.91 (--abr 128 -m j -h --lowpass 19).  MP3Trim was used to remove silence and fix any vbr or bad or missing frames problems.  MP3Gain was used to set gain to Radio type at 89 dB.  ID3 tags v1.1 & v2.3 were made by the ripper and updated with Winamp 2.78.  MJ's tagging is set to "Create (save if necessary)" for both v1 & v2.  Following is the info from MJ's Properties/Format:

MPEG-1 Layer 3
115 Kbit VBR (with Xing header)
44.1 Khz Joint stereo

ID3v1 Tag: Yes
ID3v2 Tag: Yes

Matt,

Would it help any to have the report created by Dr. Watson when MJ crashes?  If it would, I could post it here or email to you.

i think it might be better if he has the mp3 that crashes your system, with some info on how it was encoded.

they have said in the past that Dr. Watson logs do not help

I think I may be on to something here.

All the files that had trouble in MJ had previously been tagged with "Helium v2.0 Dynamic Tag Editor".  It put this in the v2.3 tag: "PRIV...1..HeliumID.Tagged by Helium v2.0 Dynamic Tag EditorTDRC......."; non-ascii characters are replaced here with a ".".  The files that MJ did manage to alter did not have this completely removed. After changing the tags with Winamp 2.78, this was completely removed and MJ no longer has any trouble with these files.

PRIV is a frame of ID3v2.3 for  "Private frame"

TDRC is a frame of ID3v2.4 for "Recording Time" and replaces the 2.3 frames for TDAT - Date, TIME - Time, TRDA - Recording dates, and TYER - Year.

My guess is that MJ is having trouble with the ID3v2.4 frames that were not in v2.3.

Maybe MJ needs to completely delete the ID3 tags and completely re-write them? Or support ID3v2.4?

My references:
http://www.id3.org/id3v2.3.0.txt
http://www.id3.org/id3v2.4.0-changes.txt

P.S. I've stopped using Helium2 because it is not compatible with the software players I use.  After using it to make some changes, I could no longer read the year in my tags.  Hmm, since YEAR is one of the frames that is replaced by TDRC, it makes sense now.

I reinstalled "Helium v2.0 Dynamic Tag Editor" for further testing.  As I suspected, it is including elements of ID3v2.4 by default.  The help file states that some mp3 players may not be compatible with 2.4 and the preferences provides a compatibility mode that will use v2.3 only.

Since removing all traces of ID3v2.4, MJ is working without a hitch.  My conclusion is that MJ has some incompatibility issues with ID3v2.4.

If anyone is having trouble with MJ writing ID3 tags, try removing or re-writing the ID3v2.x tags with another tag editor (like the one in Winamp) and try again.

Thanks for pointing that out.  Maybe I wasn't clear that I was referring to Helium2 when I posted "...the preferences provides a compatibility mode that will use v2.3 only".

We'll try to get MJ's ID3v2 support updated by the release of 8.

Matt

there is still another problem with the rename option, and MJ is reading the tags, and not filtering out the "?" and other Ilegal Chrs When Creating Dirs if you have that option turned on when renaming.
