MJ and CDDB

This is the usual story.

I downloaded and installed MJ 7.2 onto my laptop running Win2K.  It worked fine while
I was at work - where I had to use a proxy
for the CDDB service.

Then I went home.  Unchecked the proxy box
on the CDDB dialogue box (why it doesn't
just use the system's Internet options I don't know) and ever since then CDDB will
not work.

This is really a deal-killing feature for me.

I have read a whole bunch of the CDDB postings.  As a result, I have:

- uninstalled/reinstalled numerous times
- uninstalled the RioPort audiomanager - although its CDDB function continued to work even after
 MJ's crapped out
- right-clicked on the CD and chose "update CDDB"
- cleaned out ZoneAlarm from the registry (I had already uninstalled it a long time ago).
- tried MJ 8 beta
- cleaned out all MJ stuff from the registry after deinstalling

But still I get the dreaded socket error and
it will not work.

You know what?

- This is a bug.  Other CDDB applications
 can work at the same time - why not yours?
- You should have a document/FAQ somewhere
 on your site to talk about this problem.
 It's a pain to read a post with a response
 of "read the other posts."  Consolidate
 the information.

if you have a proxy put in your proxy info in the cddb proxy form.

this is required, this has nothing to do with Media Jukebox this is a CDDB thing and is the way CDDB programed it, and is required to get it to work for users with a proxy.

if you do not have a proxy, and you unchecked it, but you still have proxy info in the input boxes you may need to clear it then uncheck the box. if this is true and it starts working. i would say that would be a bug.

if you have a router at home that could be blocking it from cddb.

if you have another firewall, uninstall it and see if it works. there have been times where a firewall will block cddb when it should not. this is also true with Microsofts Windows XP firewall.

At work I have a proxy.  I used it. It worked.

At home, I have no proxy.  I unchecked the box.  It no longer worked.  This is a bug.

I have no other firewall.

My router at home does not block any other application that uses CDDB.

I installed Music Match last night.  It works. At home.  At work.  It has no problem
with CDDB.

It is a Media Jukebox bug bug bug bug bug.

Try reinstalling MJ.  Your opinion that it is a bug may not be correct.

If you read my original post, you would
see that I have uninstalled and reinstalled
numerous times.  

It is a joke that you guys keep claiming
that this is not a bug.

Why can I take the exact same machine, put
MusicMatch on it and have it access CDDB
just fine?  Both with and without proxy.

There are two versions (at least) of CDDB.  Every program installs one.  They sometimes conflict.  Try uninstalling other music software, rebooting and reinstalling MJ.  Try CDDB's support.

Lighten up or get ignored.
