I am considering a DLNA network build with JRiver as the backend library and JRemote on iPad as the controller.  Content will be a 50/50 split between video and music.  Music will be mostly FLAC with some of those FLACs being multichannel hires 24/96.

My basic question is: when I play back a video or a song, is it the PC with JRiver that's doing most of the processing, or is it the DLNA Renderer (i.e. a networked receiver or a blu-ray player)?  That is, can I get away with a lower-end box running JRiver that only needs to provide a good network stream, or should the JRiver box be something higher-end so it can provide the best possible picture/sound to the Renderer?

It depends on the Renderer's capabilities and how you configure the server (transcode or not).  First spend time seeing what your device can handle.  If you are not certain of its DLNA specs, there's a tool that can be used to query its capabilities.

I'm looking at an Oppo (BDP-103 or 105) as the Renderer since it can play physical media as well.  I haven't bought it yet so I can't run Device Spy.  But I would assume that it can natively play all the formats I want.

Based on what you say about configuring the server ("transcode or not") I am guessing that the Server does the work if I choose transcode and the Renderer does it if I don't transcode (i.e. if I don't transcode, the video or song is presented to the Renderer in a format analogous to reading it off a CD/DVD/BD and therefore the server only needs to be able to pull data off a hard drive and push it across the LAN).  Is that correct?
