So... is it cheaper to get a cheap laptop and install MC, or is there a media receiver (network player, whatever they're called) that can play the FLAC loaded in my main system on MC (up to 24/192) gaplessly. I intend to access the main system via the network (probably wired, unless wireless really is just as good quality-wise).

Googling and searching these forums leaves me to believe such devices are few and far between, and that just getting a Mac mini or cheap laptop would be the best investment.

So I take it there aren't any?  Should I just use a cheap laptop?

I've tried and probably because it's been beaten to death it's hard to find. Can we maybe compile a list here?

EDIT: In fact, a search with the terms of my subject line brings up very little and nothing concrete.

a few points:

- you wont find a cheapo multmedia streamer (e.g. WDTV) that does gapless. You will have to go for dedicated Hifi audio stuff
- Denon DNP-F109 is a very good affordable Hifi Streamer that does gapless
- T & A streamers (german) do gapless as well (at a much higher price)
- theres a german manufacturer named Teufel that offers audio streamer devices under the "Raumfeld" name, which support not only gapless, but also synchronized multiroom
- when someone says they do gapless always check whether they really do gapless over DLNA (i.e., controlled by a remote app)

so much from me

Thank you, that helps a lot.

I wonder why no one has jumped on this. The demand is there. And I imagine it would be relatively cheap to make a device that did only this one thing, and did it well.

I've often wondered the same exact thing. There are piles and piles of free software already available for some guy to parse through, embed it into a chip, and just ship it. Right now the best way I've found is just putting MC on a mini-pc (In my case a donated Mac Mini) and stuff it behind the TV and live like you're in the future.

It is still more expensive than it should be. Raspberry Pi people have been working on a much cheaper solution in the mean time. A $30 solution will eventually be possible..
