File conversion drops fields
« on: September 11, 2013, 12:01:43 pm »

Hi

I have a whole bunch of flac files that I'm converting to mp3. Recently when I do this it is dropping some (like BPM) but not all (like year) of the fields in the file tags. I haven't changed how I do the file conversion and it seems to be doing this for a bunch of different converters and in MC18 and MC19.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I'm actually not sure what could be causing that...  Anyone have any ideas?  And you said other file converter programs do the same thing?

I've tried using an online file converter and I get the same behaviour - it appears to be dropping only the BPM field though. It's also can't be to do with ripping the files, because I get the same behaviour on old files too.

Does FLAC store BPM tags, or are they sitting in my library? If it doesn't something must have changed - I have tonnes of old files that I've shifted around and the bpm comes with them fine.

BPM is related to the audio analysis changes.  Have you re-analyzed these source files and then converted?

All the BPMs are entered manually. I have audio analysis switched off in the CD/DVD rip settings and never re-analyse any of my tracks

It appears the Convert tool is not populating this field.  HH sync is though, so you might you that tool.

That works! Bit of a pain in the backside workaround though.

Now how do I submit a bug report to get it fixed.

By design the audio analysis information is not transferred on conversion.

This is because audio properties like volume and dynamic range can change with lossy encoding, DSD encoding, etc.

I suppose BPM is sort of a special case since it shouldn't change with different encodings.
