Question regarding Wasapi and HDMI
« on: September 07, 2013, 06:12:53 am »

Hi,

I have 2 questions regarding my setup, maybe anyone can help me figuring this out.

- When I used MC18 I used to have my output setup using Wasapi. The output is going to an Onkyo AV amplifier thru HDMI.
Now with MC19 If I choose Wasapi, MC19 plays, but no sound is heard. (Enabling/disabling event style makes no difference, and I didn't change any config. in the Onkyo AV amp.).

- Since I started using the Onkyo AV thru HDMI, In the 1st music played or if I change tracks, I loose 2 or 3 seconds in the beguining of each track.
If MC is playing continuously then I don't loose those 2 or 3 seconds.

Anyone have an answer for fixing those issues?

Thanks
Tiago

Go to Windows "Sound" panel and see what is your default Sound Device is - then make sure that same device is selected in the MC configuration. It probably changed when you upgraded to MC19.

Same thing happened to me when I upgraded to MC19. My MC18 settings had "Realtek HD Audio" device selected, but when I checked the settings with MC19, there was a new choice (same choice found in Windows Sound Properties called "Samsung" or "SyncMaster" (named after the monitor)). I just told MC19 to use that Device and everything was working again.

Hi,
Yes my default sound device is Nvidia HDMI Out, and it matches MC.

By the way, In MC19 If I choose Nvidia HDMI Out (DirectSound) I have sound.
I used Wasapi in MC18 for a long time and wished to continue using it.

If I choose Nvidia HDMI Out (Wasapi) - this should be the correct one - then I can't get no sound at all.
I get no error message, ...nothing. If you look to the screen, its playing, just that I have no sound comming from the speakers.

Best regards,
Tiago

As far as the gap is concerned, try the "Play silence at startup for hardware sync" option. It may work on your hardware. It unfortunately doesn't work on my HK receiver. I have asked for an options for sending a low decibel signal instead, but no luck so far  >:(

Does sound play from the receiver with HDMI using the sound check in windows?

Hi,

I've activated now "Play Silence at startup for hardware sync = 1/2 second" and it worked! There is no gap in the beguining now.
Thanks Claude!

Also discovered what happened in my Wasapi issue!
It seems that the DSP settings were not correct. Strange that I wasn't receiving a warning from MC19 (in MC18 I remember to see a popup warning that DSP settings were not correct).
I changed those and Sound is back again using Wasapi!

MC is the best and this is an excellent forum!

Best regards,
Tiago

This is because one of the awesome features of WASAPI is that it will automatically output the proper bitdepth and samplerate for the current audio. So the second or two of missing playback at the beginning is the time it takes  for your receiever to sync to the bitdepth and samplerate being given to it via WASAPI output. That is also why enabling a bit of silence at the beginning of playback helps, it gives your receiver a chance to sync before actual playback starts.

I find this much preferable to using Directsound which will resample any audio not consistent with the default chosen in the windows sound properties.

Does not work with my HK Avr as well, even if I choose 10 seconds.. I'm interested in the low decibel signal as well!

What were the correct settings? I can't get Wasapi and bitstream to work. It error's and says to go into the dsp and pick the correct setting.

Matt, can you look into it? "Play silence at startup for hardware synchronization" does not work with Harman Kardon AVRs, maybe sending a low db signal can fix this??

For the startup silence, please start a new thread with a descriptive title.  State cleanly what you want and why.

If it gets to +10 votes in the thread, we'll try low volume pink noise instead of silence.
