Author Topic: Effects, if any, Windows 2000, NTFS disk and file compression facility?  (Read 2526 times)

Windows 2000 pro, PIII-933Mhz, 392 MB.
Has anyone used the built in W2K NTFS file/disk compression facility?  Any good?
Does this further compress MP3 files?
Does it do any harm if a disk directory containing MP3 is compressed?
Same questions for WAV and APE files.

Thanks for the site.  I was trying to see if anyone here had any hands on experience with 1-performance degradation, if NTFS compression is used on MP3, WAV, or APE files, and 2- in regard to MP3 and APE, which are compressed already, whether NTFS does any additional compression?

I wouldn't recommend compression for files you use a lot.  There's a big speed hit.

And it's pretty hard to compress an mp3 or ape file any further.  You may get 1% savings, but probably not more.

WAV's will compress a little -- maybe a few percent, but general compression techniques aren't designed to exploit the type of correlation in PCM audio, so you may only get like 5% or 10% savings there as well.

Take care.

I converted an 80gig drive to NTFS (in order to overcome the Fat32 4GB file size limit).  This disk has my MJ files on it and I have not noticed any effect on playback.  I have noticed a (negative) performance effect on copying, mass file property changes, etc. (which surprised me).

Are you saying that you turned on NTFS compression as well as converting from FAT32?

I WOULD NOT TURN ON COMPRESSION

since this compression crap came out it has always taken a heavy hit on speed, and making some disk programs not work with it (defragment programs), and in some cases with an error you could not recover from it.

IQ...No, I did not use compression.  I missed that part of your original question.

Actually, if you take a fast PC with a slow hard drive and you run compression on that hard drive, you could actually see a speed increase because the drive actually has less data to read and write. But generally speaking, disk compression is bad.

I use NTFS compression on data I won't be viewing for awhile. Works nicely for humdrum text files and Word documents.

KingSparta:
What defragmenter won't defrag a compressed NTFS parition? Diskeeper works very well if you've not already tried it.

nothing that i know of currently, i was refering to right after compression came out first there were 3rd party defragmentors that did not like compression and 3rd party compression programs, then microsoft got into it first with 16bit formating then with fat32, now NTFS

I think the way they do it now has changed, but it left a bad taste in my mouth.

if you need more room buy a bigger drive

Not to mention the fact that any case of hard drive failure it instantly becomes more difficult to recover any data on a compressed drive.

The same holds true for drives using drive overlay software.

Encryption
NTFS can automatically encrypt and decrypt file data as it is read and written to the disk

How do u do this one?

Does the way fat32 and nfts write to the disk have anything to do with speed? I heard that fat 32 writes in sectors while nfts writes bit for bit. yes/no?

KingSparta:
"If you need more space, buy a bigger drive." Easier said than done when you own a laptop... laptop drives are expensive (I just spent 240 bucks for a 40 GB drive... ugh, I can get a 120 GB hard drive for my desktop for less than that). And as I said, only compress things that you don't readily use and take up a lot of space (school work and technical documentation in my case).

Doof:
I'm not sure about that. I had a corrupt parition table on one of my drives and I was able to recover 90% of my data (including data I compressed) using commercially available software.

NY40Male:
You can enable encyption in the file properties. Right click the file, click Properties. Now click Advanced and you should have an encyption option listed.

MachineHead:
FAT32 becomes less and less efficient (in both storage and speed) as you approach the end of the physical drive (has to do with sector sizes and cluster alignment). NTFS doesn't have this limitation. It's recommended by Microsoft that you not use FAT32 partitions greater than 32 GB in size.

I once spent over $1,300 for a 5 Meg Drive, And $1,250 For 1 Meg Of Dram

Want To Compair Disk Size Now?

And what would your favorite star trek show be?

We can't really compare now to then. Relative to desktop hard drives, 240 bucks for a 40 GB laptop hard drive is expensive.

Anyway, I'd have to say my favorite of all the Star Treks would be TNG. I like TOS, but it's just not as good in my opinion.

well it was more of a sexual statement (compare sizes) just a joke

I do have all the STOS and STNG all on original Video tape

I also liked STV and I may get it also, but on DVD

The New One Star Trek Enterprise is not bad, not sure about the ratings

Oh, I didn't even get the joke Next Page

I'd like to get all the TNG episodes on DVD (they're releasing the first season in May, I think), but at 120 bucks a season, I don't know if it's worth it.

I don't doubt that at all. But if your data hadn't been compressed, I could have recovered it using standard DOS utilities. Next Page
