Playing selected file adds all files in the view to Playing Now
« on: December 10, 2013, 06:25:25 pm »

If I select one (video) file only and click Play (see the screenshot 1), playback of this file starts however all files in the view are added to the Playing Now too (instead of the one and only selected file). Why?? The only way to achieve the logical expected behaviour is to right-click the file and click Play there (see the screenshot 2)

I do not double-click the file. I hover over it, Play / Tag / Menu appears, I once click the Play option.

Sorry.  Reading comprehension failure.

Are those thumbnails or categories?

Automatic thumbnails = each image represents just one file.

Can't help then.  I never use those on Hoover things except with Category views (with file listing hidden)...

Perhaps there is a reason, but that seems wrong.

I do use hover pretty often - mainly for playing audio albums (see the screenshot) where it behaves exactly as expected e.g. all tracks on the album are placed in Playing Now and playback of the first track starts.

Indeed to me it seems wrong as well. It happens with audio files too (if I change the List Style from Details to Thumbnails, clicking Play adds all currently visible files to Playing Now)

It looks like this feature is controlled by the Group By option.  In Audio, it works as expected because you don't see the Grouped By option.  Audio is automatically Grouped By -> Album, and Album thumbnails are displayed on top each other.  For example, in Genre view, if you hover over a "stack" of Albums for a particular Genre, it plays everything in that Genre.  If you hover over a single Album, it plays the entire Album.

In Images and Video, files are displayed as individual files.  If there is no grouping (default is None), it will play everything in that view (ie the whole "Group").  Now if you change the grouping (little down arrow on the tab -> Group By) you can control what it plays.  For example, in my TV Shows view, I Group By -> Series, so it plays the whole series.  If I Group By -> Name, it will play just that file.

I couldn't find a Wiki entry on it, but this is the way it appears to work for me.

I don't understand this comment.  There are no hover options in List Style -> Details view.

I understand your point however Grouping is not an option as a workaround as it makes the view unusable (one video per line).

Just re-read it again  ;)

Agreed.  I wasn't suggesting that you do that; I was just explaining how the hover Play function works.  There are multiple ways to play a file in MC.  The "workaround" would be to initiate playback another way.

I would not want the group play function to change since it is used regularly in Audio to play entire Albums or entire Artist collections.  I also use it regularly in Images so that I can click through all the files in an Album or start a slideshow.  While I don't use it much in Video, I do sometimes use it for Instructional Videos to play the whole Series or to load a whole Season of TV Shows.

As glynor says, change the Double Click behavior to Replace Playing Now (single).  This affects the Play hover button too (which acts on the items in the Group).

Hmm indeed changing the double-click behaviour DOES change the single click behaviour of the Play hover button, which does not make any sense at all.

Am I the only one (apart from Glynor) considering the Play hover button behaviour completely non-logical??

It was just an implementation choice I suppose.  The hover Play button is a Play Group command.  And that makes good sense for stock views which group by Album (hover over album name, click Play, and the entire album is queued up for playback).

I suppose one could argue that Play in the File List should only play the selected track, but users also want to be able to double-click a particular track in the file list of an album and have that track, plus the album tracks that follow, be added to Playing Now.

Indeed, and that is the way I do use it for playing the whole album from start. One correction though - this way the album is not queued up but it replaces anything in Playing Now (no matter what setting for double-click is set), which does not even follow the current behaviour.

I suppose one could argue that Play in the File List should only play the selected track

That is exactly my point

I don't follow - double clicking one file adds / replaces only that particular file in Playing Now

I'm not tracking every point here but lets try this....

A) Click an album, result is all tracks replace whatever was in playing now, from that one album (MC is operating on the album level)
B) Click an image, result is a slideshow of all images in the view (am I right on this point?  MC is operating on the view level)
C) Click a video, result is all videos in the the view in playing now (MC is operating on the view level)

My point is different media kinda have different behaviors when added to playing now. Behavior A and B probably reflect what is "expected" while C is not expected and surprises folks.

Seems like there is room for tweaking the behavior.

That's an option, but not the default.

The default is to Play All.  So, if I go to a view that shows a listing of all tracks by a particular artist, and double-click on one of them, it plays the one I double-clicked on, and then automatically continues to the next track.  Which, IMHO, it should remain, as it matches the behavior of basically all other common media players (like iTunes).

I see, however that works only when Grouping is enabled, right? (which I don't use although it does look inspiring) and with Replace All setting for double-click (I prefer Add setting). And BTW it does not add "...that track, plus the album tracks that follow" but it adds the whole album e.g. all tracks but only starts playback from the double-clicked one (that's why I was double-confused by your original post)

That's correct.  Double-click and the Play hover act on the Group in effect.  With Grouping disabled, the default is the entire file list.

The addition of the entire album (or grouping) is consistent with the double-click setting (Replace ALL).
