I've been playing with the different views in MC18 for a while (sorry, haven't upgraded to 19 yet) and I've noticed something rather strange.

In the standard "albums" view I can show the track listing for a certain album, and all the genres show up correct, as they are defined in the tags.

The problem lies in the genres:
pop; rock
rock; modern
classical; modern
etc.

Whenever there is a ";" in the genre, the genre is not represented correctly in the standard "genres" view.

Instead of Genres

pop; rock
rock; modern
classical; modern

I have genres
modern
rock

Files are listed accordingly, so now my "rock; modern" albums and "classical; modern" albums are all shown in the "modern" genre.

Hope you can fix this for me:)

Pop; Rock denotes that it will be in both Pop and Rock.
Pop\Rock denotes that it should be in Pop, and Rock as a subgenre below pop, which I think is what you're trying to achieve.

No, this is not what I want...

But I can see it's not going to be changed so that I get what I want.

I guess I'll just have to change my genre from "classical; modern" to classical - modern"

Not really a bummer actually; more like a great feature.  Genre is a list field so the semicolon separator allows you to include a song, movie, etc under multiple genre views.  It is by design.  See more:  http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/File_Properties_%28tags%29

If your library is already tagged with Genres separated by semicolons, you can use Find and Replace to change them to another separator quickly and easily.  Right click -> Library Tools -> Find and Replace -> Check None -> Click on Genre.  Find what: ";"  Replace: " -"  (the quotation marks are not used; just wanted to show you that you could add a space so it is automatically inserted).  You could also just use a comma.

You can do this to one file or many at a time.  You may want to test it on a small batch first to make sure it is doing what you want.

As before, you could use Classical\Modern to have a subgenre of Classical with your Modern Classical music, or as suggested above, Find & Replace should be able to change Classical; Modern to Classical - Modern

Unfortunately, changing the genre "pop; rock" into "pop - rock" in my case entails renaming the whole genre subdirectory.

Which in itself is not a big deal, and easily done. updating all tags is also easy.
I manage my tags outside of MC, I have a small program that updates tags using only file/directory structure as input.

I do not (want to) store ratings in the tags, because I share the same music collection with a few friends, and they obviously have their own ratings.

Changing the directory name leaves me with a "new" genre, with all new files (at least to MC18). Which means I lose all my ratings, because these are (presumably) stored in the library.

Any solution to this?

Do the rename inside Media Center's Rename, Move, & Copy Files… tool

You can modify a view to dynamically transform your genre separators into the needed by MC for lists.
