MJ 8.0.210 crashes (exists) w/o comment on CDDB access
« on: February 22, 2002, 12:09:22 pm »

MJ constantly crashes (exits w/o any error message) when accessing CDDB to get information for a new CD. Sometimes the CDDB access works, but mostly MJ exists after a few seconds trying to access CDDB. Played arround with CDDB settings (i.e. longer/shorter timeout times) w/o success. Don't remember with what Beta this started, but is still not fixed with the latest Beta 210. Any hints are welcome.

Thanks

Some of the CDDB functionality is out of our control.  It's CDDB's.

But try a reinstall.

And if that doesn't work, look at the proxy settings in the CDDB section of the MJ settings.

Jim, thanks for your comments.

I removed MJ completely and even removed all registry entries. I then performed a fresh install of MJ 8.0.211. I updated my CDDB registration w/o any problem. But the problem is still there. MJ exists after 1 or 2 seconds. I have nothing set for a Proxy.

Thanks

Could be interferance from another version of CDDB (another player).

Please note that the CDDB access works for already recorded files (i.e. when I use properties for a recorded file and then ask to access CDDB for that file). But when I go to Devices, and either select Play, or Rip CD or even click on Devices, CDDB is accessed and 1 second later MJ exits.
What could I do to track this problem down?
Thanks - Pietro

I don't think this is an MJ problem.  I think it is a CDDB problem or some other confusion with Windows, etc.

I suggest checking with CDDB.

There is one more possibility.  A problem we saw a few months ago with a firewall.  Norton, I think.  You should be able to do a search here for CDDB problems and find it.  Or search for Norton.  Or check with CDDB.

I'm now almost sure it has nothing to do with CDDB. Same problem is seen when CDDB access is turned off and I simply try to play a Audio CD and same problem is seen when I click on Burn CD. Must be some driver issue with both of my CD (on CD/DVD the other is a CD burner). I checked also the appl event log (running XP) but nothing about this error is there. Note that MS Media Player has no problems to play the same Audio CD and also get information about the CD...
I'm really out of an idea what to check now.
Anyway, time for a sleep now, will check back tomorrow.

Try changing the setting in MJ for digital playback.  It may not work with that drive.

I finally found a workaround that works most of the time. This is how it goes:
1) I have removed the "CDDB enable online lookup" feature
2) I put in the next CD to record, click on devices, and MJ exits as usual...
3) I restart MJ, click on Devices and - sometimes - it just shows the CD tracks - sometimes MJ exits again and I have to restart
4) If MJ does NOT restart, then I can use the "get CDDB" before doing the Rip CD and everything works fine
5) I then remove the CD, put in a new one, and now MJ again tries to get information from CDDB, even I have still the flag set to NOT access CDDB automatically. MJ exits and I have to start from item 1)

still very annoying but a least a workaround

So, what do I say? There is no problem with accessing CDDB, there is no CD-ROM driver problem and there is no problem with digital playback. But there seems to be some timing problem with the automatic CDDB access which causes MJ to exit. I would be very happy if you could investigate this.

Thanks again
