Can somebody help me figure out what's wrong here?

I just bought a Toshiba S50-A and installed latest MC 19. I am running Windows 7 Pro. The audio hardware in the computer identifies itself as "IDT high definition audio codec." Driver date 4/25/2013, driver version 6.10.6472.0 (seems to be latest), provider SRS Labs Inc.

In JRiver MC's DSP & output format option, I have no changes set for all sampling rates, except specify >192,000 should be down-sampled to 192 kHz. In Options => audio device I chose the available WASAPI setting. (Direct sound, null output, and disk writer options are also available.) I have also checked the box in device settings: "Open device for exclusive access."

In Windows, when I go to control panel=>sound, the default setting for the audio hardware is 48/24, but there are choices given up to 192/24, to which I've set it. The 192/24 setting stays put after reboots, etc., and the test button works - it produces good test tones thru my speakers plugged into the computer's 3.5 mm audio output jack. This selection box says it sets the default bit depth and rate in "shared mode." (Does this not apply to "Exclusive Mode?" See below.)

In same Windows sound window (i.e., "speakers properties, advanced"), there are three boxes I have checked: In the section headed, "Exclusive Mode," (1) allow applications to take exclusive control of this device, (2) give exclusive mode applications priority, and in section headed "Signal Enhancements," "Allows extra signal processing by the audio device," (3) enable audio enhancements. (I have tried unchecking box 3, but it makes no difference.)

FINALLY, THE PROBLEM: However, when I play a FLAC source with a sampling rate above 48 kHz, DSP studio says it cannot play it unless it down samples to 48. I have tried multiple sources.

Thank you so much for any advice. I never had this problems on my old XP machine, which had an Echo Indigo I/O PCMCIA sound card capable of handling 96/24.

It does NOT apply at all in Exclusive Mode.  That's the whole idea of Exclusive Mode.  It allows the application that plays the audio to "disconnect" the device from Windows and use it exclusively, which means the audio does not need to be routed through the Windows mixer.

If you do not enable Exclusive Mode, then anything you play out of MC will need to be in a format compatible with the options you have selected in the Windows Sound Control Panel.

If you have Exclusive Mode enabled, then it should be able to use any format the device says it supports.

I don't really know anything about that exact device, though.  I just wanted to address that what Windows is set to isn't directly relevant when Exclusive Mode is enabled.

One thing to check...

You didn't play with the Bitrate setting under WASAPI - Device Settings did you?  You should, almost always, leave that set to Automatic.

Thanks to you both. I do have bitdepth (not rate) set to automatic. In same WASAPI device settings window, I have box checked: "Open device for exclusive access." Is that how you set Exclusive mode? -- Paul

Do  you have another device connected to your lap top to listen to audio?

No, no other device. I am just plugging speakers or headphones into computer's audio output jack.

I had the same problem and solved it by going to tools - options - settings - DSP and unchecking Output Format.

That did the trick for me - the sample rates are the save as whatever is native to the medium.

I'm not expert on JRiver - heaven knows that there are likely some downsides to unchecking Output Format but I haven't hit any walls yet.

Okay... Try, then, setting Bitdepth explicitly to 24-bit, and see what happens.
