Stronger Airfoil Integration?
« on: May 16, 2014, 10:16:34 pm »

Hi all--

I've been a long-time MC fan, and a long time Rogue Amoeba (makers of Airfoil and other audio software) fan and am wondering if the following blog post about an updated API for Airfoil could get any traction with MC....

http://weblog.rogueamoeba.com/2014/05/16/developer-note-integrating-with-airfoil-for-windows/

I think it would sure help lots of folks out--especially those of us who are hardy cross-platform users of MC :)

Thoughts?

For a minute there I got all excited thinking that there might finally be a way to set up AirPlay devices as zones in Media Center via Airfoil—which would be the next best thing to native AirPlay support—but it looks like this API is only to pass playback information to the Airfoil Remote app, rather than something which would provide better AirPlay integration with Media Center. :(

Yep--I didn't read closely enough, though the source and transport controls would be a great addition when playing back from multiple sources (other than just MC).

Integrating the Airfoil destinations as MC zones would be a Grail-type quest....

I really wish the team at JRiver would reconsider their stance on AirPlay support - especially if it would be made easier going through Airfoil on the Windows side of things.

Airfoil/AirPlay is the only cheap and easy solution I know of to synchronized audio playback in multiple zones.
Just like Sonos, I think it's limited to 16/44 though, which is unfortunate.

But using DLNA or devices connected directly to the HTPC do not seem to sync up at all.
