Interface Plugins
« on: February 13, 2002, 12:01:17 pm »

[moved from "No build tonight"]

[My comment about work on "general plugins" (now "interface plugins") was removed.

[then I said to KingSparta]
Your name came up in discussing what the change might allow. I think you'll be able to make your program an integral part of MJ when we're done (if you want to).

ever see that milk commercial where the poor unfortunate little old lady runs out of the real stuff and tries to give her herd-o-cats the powdered coffee creamer?
remember what happens at the end when they fade to black?

got milk?

that'd be me if I tried to enforce the "one beer apiece" rule

got beer?

no build tonight?

seems awfully much like a Friday night around here

out of the amber bock--drinking Newcastle Brown Ale now

Koreth,
Right. The idea we're tinkering with is a general plugin architecture, and the first plugin we'd write is one that allows MJ to serve web pages to a client machine or device (phone?) running a browser. The client could then control what MJ plays. This should help solve the problem of using new generation devices like PDA's to control a home theater or music system.

By The Way,
I was editing some docs in Word today and while I was about to include a
drawing from an external OLE App using Insert/Object I was surprised to find in the object types the following new ones :
JRiver MJPlayer Control
JRiver MJVisEngine Control
JRiver PlayerCtrl
Tried it but crashed Word !

Jim, is this related to the new architecture you're mentioning ?
Anyway things look exciting !

Intéressant, très intéressant...

Do you have A Dell?
JimH
Are you talking about when saying "the first plug-in we'd write is one that allows MJ to serve web pages to a client machine"
Where you could run a web site from MJ, serving up pages, maybe files from the hard drive.

If the answer is yes then I too will use the words

"Excellent" as KingSparta rubs his green and long fingered hands together with an Evil & Cringing smile on his face.

King,
> you could run a web site from MJ, serving up pages, maybe files from the hard drive
No. It's not meant to serve out files but to play them. It will allow MJ to be controlled from a remote device (computer, PDA, telephone, webpad, etc) the way a TV is now controlled from the remote in your left hand while you've got a beer in your right hand and your arm around your dog (or kitten) (or bambi).

KingSparta> At home, no. I have a Doof Special.
At work, yes. I'm using a Dell Inspiron 4100.

Basically, if I'm understanding this right, this would be the answer to running a central server connected to a home-wide speaker system, and being controlled by client machines located throughout the house. A software version of Audiotron, all built into MJ.

Doof
> this would be the answer to running a central server connected to a home-wide speaker system, and being controlled by client machines located throughout the house
Correct. It doesn't address the question of how to switch between zones because MJ doesn't support that, but if the speakers were all on, you could control what was being played.

KingSparta 02-13-2002 03:48:40 P.M.
how would you controlit from a PDA
what type of interface, would you need air card, bluefang etc....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JimH 02-13-2002 03:53:42 P.M.

You'd need a browser on the PDA and a TCP/IP connection.
Without TCP/IP, you could use IR on some (some don't have the range). The connection issues get complex, and luckily, they're mostly not our problem. But if the connection is there, a program could be written.
