Feature Request: Filters and DSD DSP [Signalyst Partnernship]
« on: October 30, 2013, 01:44:06 am »

DSD is taking off, whether we like it or not  :-*

I think JRiver would really benefit with a partnership with Signalyst. They offer the next level of features many audiophiles love to play with. I'm sure MC has seen massive growth and exposure due to the time they have taken to add "audiophile" features (while at the same time keeping MC rock solid for Video/TV).

Features:
Software upsampling / downsampling with selectable algorithm up to 32-bit 1.536 MHz or down to 16-bit 32 kHz PCM (14 options, most "apodizing")
Delta-Sigma modulators for upsampling PCM/DSD content up to 24.576 MHz 1-bit SDM (6 oversampling options)
Selectable dithering / noise shaping algorithm (7 options)
Selectable convolution algorithm (FIR) for equalization, such as digital room correction (2 options), for PCM/DSD content
Optional high-frequency expansion for the convolution engine
Software-based digital volume control for PCM and SDM (DSD)
Playback of DSF/DSDIFF files through any supported audio interface (PCM conversion and 128x to 64x conversion)
Selectable algoritm and noise filters for DSF/DSDIFF PCM playback (7 / 6 options)
Native/direct playback of DSF/DSDIFF files (ASIO DSD, DoP v1.1 with both 0x05/0xFA and 0x06/0xF9 markers)
Playback of stereo, 2.1, 3.0, quadrophonic, 3.1, 5.0, 5.1 and 7.1 channel material
Speaker configuration for multichannel playback (delay and level) for PCM and SDM (DSD)
Bypasses operating system software mixer and sample rate conversion
Support for professional ASIO drivers
Multi-room support with Signalyst Asynchronous Network Audio Adapters
Support for ID3v2 tags on AIFF, DSF and WAV files (versions 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4)
Smooth level limiter for clipped material
"Dual wire" channel bonding support to reach 2x rates, PCM and DoP (DSD)
64-bit floating point processing
Full support for multi-core processors (can utilize up to around 27 cores depending on configuration)
Light-weight GUI in Desktop version to lower graphics noise
Resampling filters:
6 linear phase
5 minimum phase
3 impulse optimal
Dithers and noise-shapers:
4 dithers
4 noise shapers
Delta-Sigma conversion:
3 modulators
11 oversampling filters (64x - 512x)
Direct rate conversions
Digital volume control
Convolution engine

This would be awesome for those of us running (or soon to be running) active crossovers and like to listen to DSD material.

Gee. And all I wanted for Christmas was my two front teeth..    :o

Seriously though, one of my standard mottos is if you don't ask you don't get. So, go for it. In time and with user support, I'd expect that you've got a good chance of getting many cool features added.

Yes, give us more filter options to play with. :) Audirvana for Mac has them too.

I wouldn't mind an option to use SoX rather than SSRC though.
That gives you a few more options when resampling, and gives measurably better performance.

It will happen. Now that Matt's back  ;D

Seriously, though just as MC gained a ton of popularity with "that" crowd a few years back, this is another step forward.

You wouldn't believe how many 'philes still won't use it. Adding filters and investigating Miska's DSP would benefit all.

It would be great to have DSD (wide?) versions of the DSP functions now that DSD downloads & DACS are more popular.

I would love (!!!) to see this too.

I keep reading that Signalyst is on the cutting edge with DSP, but from a user interface/functionality standpoint, their application is extremely primitive - which is apparently the way they want it.

I would be very happy to see advancements in JRiver's DSP, especially as it relates to DSD conversion.

We have class leading DSP.  The conversion from DSD to PCM is perfect (in my opinion).

I believe this thread is about real-time conversion of content to DSD, not the other way around.

Signalyst offers the ability to upsample beyond DSD128 to DSD256 and there are options available to select different filters, noise shaping and dithering, etc. People are reporting getting excellent results with it, provided your computer and DAC are up to the task.

Is it possible that some of the capabilities could be consider for JRiver?

Well, I'm also totally happy with our DSD encoder.  A lot of engineering went into it, and the results are fantastic.
