error message
« on: September 07, 2014, 11:22:12 am »

Hi all.
Have been using mc 17 for quite a while and decided to upgrade with the august offer. Have recently tried to install but keep getting the same message which is " error restoring media centre licence. Unknown error"
i can see it in the download folder on the pc.

Maybe I'm being a bit stupid and have missed something. so simple answers are best for me to see where I'm going wrong  ?

Cheers
Neil

Please try this topic from our wiki:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Restoring_a_License

The version of your license and the installed program must match.

Thanks for the response.
I have tried to sort this out but not being au fait with Windows I'm struggling as I don't understand
what I'm supposed to be doing.
Maybe some kind soul in the UK could sort out an idiot's way to do this?

Have you downloaded MC20 and installed it?

Have downloaded it and can see it in the download folder. When I click on it I get the error message. I assume it's got something to do with versions having to match according to what I've been told but I just don't follow what I should be doing due to being a bit ropey on windows.

Hover your mouse over this file in your download folder. What does it say in the pop-up box?

You need to install Media Center first before your license file will work.

No-one will be able to help you with your problem if your description is "there's some kind of error, I don't know".
What does the error message say?

As per first post I've been using mc17 prior to going for mc20 upgrade.  Also the message is as per first post which says "error restoring media centre licence. Unknown error"

Fangio, I'll check that out. I'm using iPad and splashtop as my interface. So thanks for info.

You may need to right-click > Properties to find the information, if you aren't shown the pop-up.

Hi Fangio,
Have clicked on properties and the pop up has the usual general, security, window. Any particular info you require?

Type of file please. I am expecting something like "MediaCenter.20.Registration (.mjr)"

It says MediaCenter.17.Registration (.mjr)

It says Media_Center20_Windows-261755 above type of file.

You are looking at your install key. Have you actually downloaded and installed MC20? It's available at the top of this board. This is a process quite separate from purchasing a licence.

Thanks Fangio, I hadn't realised that. its downloaded now and I can open mc20. What a clot really.

Will I have to import everything from mc17 to mc20 as it seems blank? You have been very patient with me many thanks.

Tried the back up and restore so many times. But to be honest I'm wondering if I'm even doing that right.

Do I have both versions running at the same time?

I am but a simple carpenter and thus don't have the vast experience of the wiser members of this great forum.

  • Start with both versions closed
  • Open MC17 and run File → Library → Back Up Library
  • Quit MC17
  • Open MC20 and run File → Library → Restore Library

Thanks guys for being so tolerant and understanding of my predicament and guiding me through this.

All sorted and will try and get this old grey matter of mine to retain the knowledge. Or better still read more on the forum.

Cheers
Neil.
