Author Topic: Can MC Remote Control Pioneer DLNA Device to Play Media Stored on It?  (Read 1607 times)

I have a Pioneer VSX-823k receiver (DLNA) in my home office connected to our network. As I spend many hours in that office, I would like to be able to control playback, from my PC, of musical files stored on USB drives connected to the Pioneer receiver. Is this possible with the JRiver software?

Thanks!

Welcome!

You'll notice I changed the subject line of your post.  What you used was understandable (and it is not a big deal we're not a bunch of rules lawyers here), but generally you'll get better results if you use a descriptive subject line for your posts, instead of a generic "Help me, I have a Question" type subjects.

Think of it like the headline of your post.  But, as I said, welcome!

To answer your question, I think so.  I'm not sure about one piece of your question: using it to play media files attached to the receiver itself.

Generally, MC works quite well with DLNA devices.  It can serve its own Library as a DLNA Server, so you can browse and use the entire Library from your Pioneer.  And, it can remote control the receiver easily.  MC will auto-create a zone for the receiver when it sees it on the network, and you can play any file in MC's Library to it.  It can even be set up as a DLNA Renderer itself, so that you could control it and play music (on your PC) from a separate DLNA controller.

I'm pretty sure MC can connect and browse the library of a DLNA Server on your network as well.  I know it could, as it is explicitly mentioned in the Wiki DLNA article.  But that stuff is pretty old, and I think the way you access them has possibly changed.  Perhaps someone else can comment and describe the exact steps.  I have a receiver I can play to from MC (and that works) but it doesn't have any media attached to it, and I haven't ever turned on its server or anything.

If you haven't, you can download the trial and try it.  They have a full-featured 30 day trial and JRiver strongly recommends that you use it and try anything that is essential to you before you buy it.

Check under Playing Now in the Tree, and under Tools > Options > Media Network.

Thanks for the speedy response, Glynor!

I guess I'll have to download the software and see if I can get it to work with my setup. As I have two loaded 400 CD changers and USB devices connected to my receiver, you can understand that I don't want to have to digitize all of the media in order to be able to play it in my office. Secondly, as my PC is a business machine, using it for other purposes is a self imposed no-no.   :D

Thanks again!

Unless the receiver can act as a DLNA server itself, as well as just a renderer and controller, I don't see how MC could even find the files on the receiver to play.
I may be wrong about that, or the receiver may indeed act as a server too, so all hope isn't lost.
