Hi All,

I just got my lifetime purchase of a pair of 2912s.

They are huge, as you may know, and I can't yet (until we move next year) accommodate them far enough out from the rear room wall.

Because of this, the bass is bit light. (they go down to 30 Hz).

Should I try to boost it a bit in the equaliser?

Yes, I know I can just try it, but would like some opinions first.

I never use tone correction normally.

If the speakers have the necessary headroom, why not?
Room modes are minimum phase filters and as the parametric eq in jriver is an IIR filter you can not only linearize the frequency response but also improve the phase and reverberation*.
But I would really recommend to measure first, fixing room accoustics by ear is always inferior to measurements.

But you really should only do this in the low end, because you're altering the first wavefront which, at higher frequencies, is percieved worse than the original frequency response.


*reverberation isn't the technical correct term in this context, but I currently can't recall the correct one. (I'm a non native speaker, if that counts as an excuse)

The top end is fine and the overall sound very clear.

I'll try a bit of boost to the lower register.

Congrats!

Bass is not the stronghold of panel speakers.
Bass from conventional ported speakers is often a bit bloomy.
It might be a matter of getting used to the "lighter" sound of the Quad.
Moving them to a corner might boost the bass as well.

You can use EQ to boost the bass but you run the risk the signal starts to clip as a lot of modern recordings are already very close to the clipping point.
Best is to do the reverse, leave bass at 0 and lower the rest, beats clipping!

Getting a bit more used to the size, but the wife is very quiet on the subject!

They are sensitive to positioning and supposed to be at least 60cm 2 feet from a rear wall to allow the bass to develop.

I've upped the bass a bit and it is better.

They are just so clear and life like - voice, acoustic guitar, animal sounds ...... very natural.
