Anybody know why some MKV do not play on my HTPC with 6 channel sound using WASAPI HDMI bit streamed but play on my 2 channel stereo PC?

My guess is the source's input channels do match anything available on your output. I've seen this with some odd ball audio on some mkvs. If you change the output to match your speaker/receiver config, it should work. For example set the output in DSP studio to 5.1 etc.

Download a (free) copy of "MediaInfo", then you can see into the MKV file and find out what Audio formats/requirements are necessary to play the file.

What OS and Motherboard are you using. I recently had issues playing DTS-MA and Dolby TrueHD on system. Turned out it was the Microsoft HD audio driver that was the problem. I uninstalled it and installed the specific one for my motherboard and all was OK.

You can do a simple check Maid by going into Control Panel then Sound. Select the device that does your HDMI sound then Supported Formats. If it doesn't say DTS-MA or Dolby TrueHD and you know that your amp supports that format then the driver is screwed up.

Did you rip to MKV yourself and from what source. Your image from media info shows DTS-MA as the included audio. If your amp doesn't support this but does support normal lossy DTS then it should still play, you just won't get the lossless version of the track but your amp needs to support DTS and the sound control panel needs to say DTS as a supported format.

Edited: Just re-read that your using a 2 chan Stereo to output the files to. The file you have doesn't have any 2 chan audio so you will not be able to bitstream it. You will need to use JRiver internal audio engine to decode and output 2 chan audio.

My MB and Onkyo are as per my signature. Its a gigabyte MB and Onkyo nr925

when I go to control panel sound the onkyo has never displayed it actually says spidif digital connection.

As you suspected there is no dolby true hd in fact there is not many there at all.

How do I fix this please???

Have you checked the Gigabyte website for your MoBo's latest drivers?

Grab the audio driver and give that a bash.

Your motherboard has only S/PDIF output (with additional RCA jack outputs for sub/center, sides, rear speakers). S/PDIF can carry two channels of uncompressed PCM audio or compressed 5.1/7.1 surround sound (such as DTS audio codec); it cannot support lossless formats (such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio) which require greater bandwidth like that available with HDMI or DisplayPort.

The the screen shot you provided from mediaInfo shows the MKV movie includes has the DTS (core) audio so it should play.

have you looked at the Windows Sound properties as in the screen shot WeeHappy posted? Do you see the Supported Formats page? what does it show?

Hi maid

The problem stems from the very limited audio capabilities of your motherboard and video card. If you were willing to spend about $50 the problem could go away, forever. $80 -$100 and you could run (Red October HQ) MadVR as well. You would need a newer video card that can carry full 7.1 audio too; you have a great AV receiver, but currently you are not using it to its full potential.

You would need to be able to install a video card to replace the current nvidia, and be able to install its drivers. I would recommend a cheap, used 450gts for example. It may well use less power that the current gt9500 too.

In the meantime, since you are good with screenshots, can you post shots of your audio device settings in MC's audio options.
Also the bit streaming options you have set up, and the output format in the DSP studio.

Sorry. I looked up the MB specs here http://download1.gigabyte.us/Files/Manual/motherboard_manual_ga-ep35c-ds3r_e.pdf which shows no HDMI on motherboard,
but I missed/forgot that you have an NVidia video card with an HDMI out.

BTW - Do you know that when you choose to "bitstream" in JRiver setup, that by-passes all the JRiver DSP settings, so JRiver program is doing nothing to help, your relying on the Onkyo to do all the audio "work". That's okay if that's the way you want it, but the settings gvanbrunt is showing above won't work/help.

Just downloaded a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 1080/29.97i test file and it will not play in JRiver but will play in windows media player

JRiver in your case is trying to bit stream the file Maid. Windows Media Player doesn't, it just sends the non HD part to the amp. In JRiver go into settings then video and untick bit stream.

Your best option though is to change your gfx card for a newer model as mentioned earlier in the thread. This will install the latest nvidia hd audio then you will have DTS-MA and Dolby TrueHD.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Upgraded the card to a GTX460 and to my amazement I now see my AV amp in the sound list and windows sound now has true HD

Tried to turn on Red October HQ but video was jumpy so went back to Standard

The card is more than capable of playing ROHQ. Was hardware acceleration option in Video checked on or off? Try the opposite. If that doesn't work, there are still ways of fixing it, but they will be more complex.
